Barbara Joan Nielsen Bates

Barbara Joan Nielsen Bates, 90, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017 peacefully in West Haven.

She was born March 28, 1927, a second generation American. She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1945.

On November 5, 1946, Barbara married Leland J. Bates, Sr. they were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple.

She enjoyed a successful career at the IRS.

Barbara was an active member of the LDS church. She and Leland served a mission at the church cannery, helping people prepare for emergencies.

She loved to travel and often talked of her trips to China, Scandinavia, Portugal, Spain, North Africa and Russia. She liked to collect salt and pepper shakers from places that she visited.

Barbara was a Weber State Basketball fan and held season tickets for the past 30 years. She loved her family very much. She always gave birthday cards to each child, grandchild and great-grandchild. She would often spoil her great-grandkids with ice cream and jelly beans. She loved to collect frogs. The great-grandchildren loved to find her frogs for holiday gifts, Barbara was very hospitable. If you came to her house, she would insist on feeding you.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Leland Joseph Bates, Sr., Roy; daughter-in-law, Rosanne Bates, Hooper; Carl (Penny) Bates, Clinton; Debra (John) Boatright, Roy; 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one brother, Jean Nielsen. She was preceded in death by her parents Ada and Michael Carl Nielsen, her son, Leland J. Bates, Jr. and three brothers, Quinten Nielsen, John Nielsen and Ray Nielsen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the Sandridge Ward Chapel, 4900 South 2000 West, Roy. The family will meet with friends Friday, June 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
