Carolyn Payne

Carolyn Joyce Payne was welcomed home by her Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 17, 2016, after a lifetime of dedicated service to her family. No woman had a greater capacity to love unconditionally and whole heartedly. Her spunky, fiery presence will be greatly missed.

Joyce was born in Burley, Idaho on May 1, 1930. She was the first of two children of Edith Mae Hadley and Thayer Conner. She attended Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah and graduated in 1948.

After being stood up twice, Joyce very reluctantly agreed to a third date with Jay S. Payne. He wooed her with a fancy first date, by flying her to Idaho in a borrowed plane. A year later on February 8, 1949, they married in Brigham City. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple two years later. Together they had two daughters who were the loves of their lives.

Joyce was an exceptionally hard worker, always contributing to the family. She worked at the Freeport Center in Clearfield and later, Davis County School District as a Bus Aide helping handicapped children. She worked tirelessly with rarely a complaint. It was by her example that her children and grandchildren learned their incredible work ethic. Her home was spotless at all times, and decadent three-course-meals were prepared every evening. She found great joy spending time in the mountains, camping in her 1970’s blimp of a motorhome with her family.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joyce attended the Layton 10th Ward with her husband. Her many hobbies included cooking, gardening, painting ceramics, getting her hair done, and never missing an opportunity to “go to lunch with the girls”. Known for her one-liners, her fun and witty personality was unmatched. Her giggle was contagious and her sense of humor ever present. She single handedly supported several causes: Publishers Clearinghouse, Avon and Fingerhut catalogs. Dedicated to her love of style and fashion, her wardrobe was always bright and colorful. There was never a hair out of place or an outfit without a big accessory. Ultimately, it was her love for her family that made her life complete.

The loss of Joyce will make this world less delightful. However, we are so grateful for the 86 years of love and memories she provided us, and the knowledge that she is with her Savior and many cherished loved ones.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Jill (Dave) Shelton, Layton; two granddaughters Texie Robinson, Clinton and Jylaire (Matt) Thorell, Syracuse; two grandsons, Bridger Robinson, Clinton and York (Jenny) Cooper, Layton and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay S. Payne, daughter, Brenda Joyce King, grandson, Jayson Brett Robinson, and sister, Dixie Maw.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Chancellor Gardens and Canyon Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband and daughter at Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
