Corey L. Thurgood

“Crazy Papa”

December 16, 1952 ~ September 4, 2018

On Tuesday, September 4, 2018 Corey L. Thurgood passed away from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was born, December 16, 1952, the fourth and final child of Lois and Duane Thurgood of Syracuse, UT. Corey was educated in the Davis County School system. On November 17, 1971, he married Sherry McKnight and from this union, a daughter, Shanda, was born. They later divorced.

Corey was employed in the transportation and freight industry, first with Grant Trucking, and later with YRC (Yellow) Freight. He was a member of the Teamsters Union 222 and at the time of his passing, had been employed with YRC for 18 years. He was extremely hardworking and well liked by his fellow employees. Additionally, he took pride in the properties he purchased and managed as a landlord.

On September 15, 2001, Corey married Sue Christensen Barker and gained three sons, Byron, Austin and Chad. Their marriage was an extreme adventure.

His favorite things were children, pigeons, peaches, distinctive cars, Harley Davidsons, and roses. Corey enjoyed yard work, motorcycles, humor, western dancing, classic country music, bicycling, and hard work. His ambition, dedication and infectious laughter made an impression wherever he went and he made friends easily. He also participated as a re-enactor of the American fur trade and spent many happy hours with his wife and family at Mountain Man Rendezvous’. He was a member of the Fort Buenaventura Mountain Men association and received recognition from the State of Utah Division of Natural Resources for the many hours of dedicated service he provided at the Fort.

Corey’s magnetic energy attracted everyone and his death created a massive hole in all who knew him. He found humor in every situation. He was very giving and his final generous act was to help multiple people who needed transplants. He lives on.

Corey is survived by his wife, Sue; brothers: Colin (Terri), Mike (Carol); daughter, Shanda Ball (Jason); sons: Byron Barker (Darren Rogers), Austin Barker (Wendy), Chad Barker (Julie). He is also survived by his five grandchildren Sarah, Rylie, Ryker, Mason and Lucy, who affectionately called him "Crazy Papa". Preceding him in death were Corey’s brother Rick (Betsy Panucci) and his mother and father.
