David Hatch Geddes

April 8, 1943 ~ October 24, 2021

David Hatch Geddes was a gentle giant. Those who knew him best observed his sincere, caring nature and twinkle in his eye. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on October 24, 2021, at the age of 78 following health complications from a stroke.

David was born on April 8, 1943, to David Roy and Thora Lucretia Hatch Geddes in Cache Valley, Utah. He was raised on a farm and enjoyed the blessings of plenty of chores and hard work. Because of health trials in his youth, he learned to trust in his Savior and appreciate the blessings of the gospel that were taught in his home. David played piano in a dance band with his brother Ray, and it was a treat for his loved ones to hear him play. After graduating from North Cache High School, he attended Brigham Young University before serving a mission in Northern Germany for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning from his mission, he attended BYU where he graduated and met his sweetheart, Anavon Harris, the cute girl at the candy counter. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1967 and were blessed with 10 beautiful children and remained sweethearts through 54 years of marriage.

David devoted his life to raising his children in love and righteousness. The happiness of his children was paramount, and he consecrated his life to teaching them the principles of the gospel. He loved coaching his children in soccer and basketball, helping with science fair projects, and attending endless recitals and activities. Escalante, Laguna Beach, and Geddes Cove, the family cabin, were favorite family destinations, and many memories were made. He taught by word and example of what matters most.

After graduating from dental school in Lincoln, Nebraska, David and Anavon returned to Utah and set up a dental practice in Ogden. He genuinely cared for his patients and his employees. He served as president of the Weber District Dental Society, Utah Chapter of Dentistry for Children, and BYU Academy of Dentists. After his formal retirement from dentistry in 2009, he and Anavon traveled to Guatemala to perform dental humanitarian service. Upon return, they volunteered at the Ogden Rescue Mission Dental Clinic for five years.

David loved and served faithfully. He was always on the errand of the Lord. He was called as a young Bishop at the age of 29 and served for seven years. For nine years he served as a counselor in the Stake Presidency of the Mt. Ogden Stake. He also served as Stake Mission President and Stake Young Men’s President. In his later years, David served a part-time mission with Anavon in the Salt Lake City Temple Square Mission while also serving as Stake Patriarch in the Weber Stake.

David lived a life full of service to his family whom he dearly loved, in his profession where he demonstrated great compassion and expertise, and ultimately to his Savior in whom he had complete devotion.
