Don Carlos Shaw

May 20, 1933 ~ February 21, 2019

Don Carlos Shaw, 85, passed away at his home February 21, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 20, 1933 in Ogden, Utah to Lawrence E. and Elizabeth Lindsay Shaw, the second of six sons. As a young boy, he was raised on a small farm in Ogden Valley, attending Liberty and Valley Schools. Eventually he returned to Liberty, residing there the past 56 years, the place he often referred to as “the closest you can get to heaven on earth.”

A very accomplished athlete, he received the gold watch as the “Outstanding Athlete” at both Weber High School and Weber College, where he earned letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track.

He married Margo Helen Marriott in the Salt Lake Temple on March 18, 1954, then and forever the love of his life. They were blessed with five daughters and one son. He was drafted into the army for two years during the Korean War. Honorably discharged in 1956, he then attended Utah State University receiving his degree in Physical Education and Recreation, with a Physiology minor. He taught and coached at Mount Ogden Junior High School and Ben Lomond High School for twenty years, positively influencing the lives of many students. After retiring, he became a fulltime sheep rancher, cutting his last field of hay in 2017. In 2016, he was honored with the Weber County Farm Bureau Lifetime Agriculture Achievement Award.

A faithful follower of Christ, Don served as Bishop of the Liberty Ward, completing two missions with his wife, Margo, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Calgary Canada and the Nauvoo Temple. They also served as Temple Ordinance Workers at the Ogden Temple for 9 years. His current and favorite calling was serving as the Young Men’s basketball coach, which he did regularly for the past 30 years. Deer hunting, horse pack trips, fishing, watching high school sports, and playing with his grandkids were his pastimes. His greatest legacy is his eternal family.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Margo; his children: Donene Jones (Ryan), Carolyn Hogge (Kevin), Frank Shaw (Paula Kippen), Lynette Oberg (Craig), Nancy Shupe (Jay), Valerie Morby (Dave), 28 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren; his brothers, Clair, Dean (Rhonda), Carlyle (Terry), Bob (Kathy); and sister-in-law, Ilene Shaw. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eddy; and two sisters-in-law, Alice and Jackie; along with his parents who welcomed him to heaven with open arms.
