Janice Marie Hassell
August 4, 1938 ~ January 17, 2017
Janice Marie Hassell passed away on January 17, 2017 at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Ogden, Utah on August 4, 1938 to John Burton and Dorothy Lamb Grace. She married her high school sweetheart, Roy Hassell, on June 25, 1960. They were married for 56 years.
Janice attended Ogden City Schools, graduating from Ogden High in 1955. Her subsequent education included graduation from St. Benedict’s Hospital School of Nursing, baccalaureate and master degrees in nursing from the University of Utah, and a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah. She was also involved in several nursing organizations during her career.
Janice’s employment as a nursing educator spanned 42 years and included teaching positions at St. Benedict’s School of Nursing and 19 years as a faculty member at the University of Utah College of Nursing. After retiring from the University of Utah in 1988, she served as coordinator for the nursing program at DATC which was affiliated with Salt Lake Community College and later Weber University. She also directed the new Practical Nursing Program at DATC. She retired from nursing in 1999, but continued to tutor students in her home where she enjoyed teaching and learning from them.
Janice enjoyed reading, playing card games, traveling with Roy to their home in St. George, watching and attending sporting events, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Her main joy in life was her family. She supported us in all our endeavors and never missed a game, performance or activity. Janice believed in equality in all things, and she is responsible for the success of so many. She had a way of making each person feel special, and she touched our lives in a way that will always be remembered.
Janice is survived by her loving husband, Roy; three children, Chad (Karen) Hassell, Guy (Cari) Hassell, and Suzy (Nicole) Hassell; and six grandchildren who she adored; Lexie, Katie, Bree, Gracie, Harper, and Grayson.
