Janice Radford McDermott, age 72
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janice Radford McDermott. After a long, difficult struggle with her earthly body, she has been welcomed into heaven with open arms.
Janice was born on September 26, 1948 to Darrell and Loretta Radford of Idaho, was raised in Fruit Heights, Utah, married Blaine F. McDermott on August 31, 1965 and lived in West Point, Utah from 1971 until she was called back home on May 16, 2021.
Janice’s greatest joy was her family. She was married to Blaine F. McDermott for over 56 years, they had eight children together consisting of Shanna (Guy) Maher, Rodd Blaine (Kelly) McDermott, Spring (Blaine) Heiner, Holly (Ryan) Rackham, Jill (Brian) Kirk, James (Tara) McDermott and their adopted children, Cole McDermott and Kaylan McDermott. She truly loved her grandchildren Crystal (Harold), Rachael, Jessica (Taylor), Rieger, John Blaine, Tana (Jordan), Felicia, Chance, Cheyenne (Austin), Tyler, Mason, Ireland, Paige, Lillian, Braeden, Zack, Breanne, Kyler, Trevin, Camden, and her great grandchildren Emily, Lilly, Owen, Spring and Willow. She was very proud of this legacy and wants to let them all know that she loves them and is counting on them to carry on in honoring their name and remembering who they are.
Janice lived a simple life that she dedicated to her family, her friends, and her faith. She loved things like family gatherings, watching cartoons with the children, going up town for a special treat at McDonald’s. As a young mother, she enjoyed taking her little kids to the rodeos to watch their dad and then treating them to a rodeo burger.
Janice loved her calling serving as the ward librarian and then as the stake librarian for a combination of over 25 years, of which she shared with one of her closest and dearest friends (you know who you are).
Some fun and maybe unknown, (or maybe NOT so unknown), facts about Janice:
She was born in a milk truck. Her father was a milkman …..
She was a loving, motherly figure to her children’s friends. She was a neighborhood mom in that she watched out for all of the kids, treated them as if they were her own and always had a place for them at the table.
Her grandkids called her Grannie. She did not like this nickname at first, but as the grandchildren continued to call her Grannie, she adapted and would not have had it any other way! She would say, “Yes, I am your Grannie, but you’re the only one I let call me that.”
One of her favorite pass times was to play cards with her sisters on the weekend days, where they would talk for hours.
She was a Cub Scout Den Mother when Rodd was little. She really enjoyed spending that time with the little boys.
She went to every game, performance, or pageant, any of her kids or local grandkids ever participated in. She was a proud mom and grannie who would cheer us on no matter the situation.
She constantly played good, upbeat music. She would dance around the house singing along with the likes of Elvis, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checkers, The Everly Brothers. One of her favorite dances was Bubble Gum Dancing and she loved doing the Twist!
She loved Christmas! Taking the kids driving up and down Gentile Street in Layton to see the lights and going over to Ogden to the Christmas Village were highlights to the season for her. She always seemed to make it magical.
She made the best peanut butter bars!
Janice loved YOU! She loved being your daughter, your sister, your wife, your mom, your grannie, your aunt, and your friend.
All who knew Janice remark on her kindness and willingness to help others in any way that she was able. She was a solid gold person all the way through. She continued to stay positive despite her challenges, no matter the situation.
Her patience, compassion and true love of her family and friends will be missed by all who were blessed to know her and spend time with her.
One of the last things she said was for us “not to cry, but to smile, because she was going out with one.”
