Marion attended Utah State University where she met and married the love of her life.  She completed her undergraduate degree after her children became school age. She attended several different undergraduate schools as her husband Bob's military career required frequent moves. She then received her Master’s degree from Denver University and became a licensed clinical social worker.

She began and ended her career at Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado, retiring just prior to her 72nd birthday. Most of her career was spent as a member of the Burn team. Marion was a visionary, and knew that children and their families still needed help after discharging from the hospital and re-entering their communities.  She realized their hardest battle was yet to come. To meet their needs, Marion developed an outreach School Re-entry Program designed to educate classmates and teachers prior to school re-entry. Marion created a juvenile fire-setters program for schools and fire departments to better identify, manage, and help those individuals.

Her most significant contribution was and still is the development of the first ever residential summer camp for children with burn injuries in the United States at Cheley Camp in Estes Park, Colorado.  This camp has been a model for many of the burn camps established throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.  The Burn Camp continues today and is growing.  In addition, there is now a winter camp and a family camp.  She has impacted the lives of thousands of children, their families, medical professionals, firefighters and volunteers associated with "her" Burn Camps. Marion served on the board of the American Burn Association, the editorial board of the Journal of Burn Care and Research, and authored numerous psychosocial articles.  She also presented numerous scientific papers at burn meetings. In 1990, she received the prestigious Curtis P. Artz Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding contributions in the burn field. Marion also served on the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and assisted in the development of the SOAR (Survivors Offering Assisting in Recovery) Program, a national peer support program for burn survivors and their families. Marion was awarded the prestigious Breslau Award from the Phoenix Society. Marion openly shared her vast knowledge and experience with colleagues here and across the world. The burn community will miss her immensely and will always remember her kind and generous spirit.

As vast as her contributions to the Burn Community were, her true gift was being a gracious, nurturing, fun-loving, and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend.  She shared her love so freely, and was loved by many, in return. She will be truly missed!

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be given to the Children's Hospital Colorado Burn Camps. “Her” camp that still continues today.
