Richard Evert Carroll passed away at his home in Ogden on Thursday, March 6, 2014.  Richard was born on May 5, 1932 in Ogden, Utah the son of Vernon J. and Mary Evertsen Carroll.  He was educated in Ogden, graduating from St. Joseph’s Grade School in 1948 and Ogden High School in 1950.  Richard graduated from Weber State College with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting.

He entered the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict, serving at US Bases and in England with the 49th Air Division, 47th Bomb Wing until 1956.  When Richard returned to the United States and Utah, early in 1956, he met and fell in love with DeNiese McGahan.  Richard and DeNiese were married, August 31, 1957, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ogden, Utah.  They had and raised four children.

Richard worked as an Air Reserve Technician with the newly formed reserve unit at Hill Air Force Base, beginning in 1956, helping to develop the Reserve flying program that became what is today the 419th Fighter Wing.  He continued to serve as an Air Reserve Technician during the Vietnam conflict and the entire Cold War.  Richard retired from the USAF and USAFR, in May 1992, as a Chief Master Sergeant, Air Craft Maintenance Superintendent, after forty years of service.  He was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations.  In 1984, Richard was honored by having recently developed conference and training room within the 419th Fighter Wing complex, named after him; the “CARROLL ROOM”.

He has been a member of The Knights of Columbus, B.P.O. Elks Lodge, V.F.W., NRA, and N.A.R.F.E.

Richard has been a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Ogden, serving as a Eucharistic Minister with DeNiese for many years.  More recently, Richard became of a member of St. James Parish of Ogden.  In addition to his love of airplanes, Richard loved Steam Engines and spent many days volunteering at the Ogden Union Station and working with his son Richard, at the Golden Spike National Historic Site.

Richard is survived by his four children, three daughters and one son, Teresa (Chris) Woodruff; Catherine (Joe) Muniz, of Ogden; Margaret (Andy) McGovern, Worcester, MA; and Richard V. (Andrea) Carroll, Brigham City, UT; by his nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, one sister, Vivian (Woody) Haines of Laramie, WY; and his long time friend, Kay Dean, North Ogden, UT.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, DeNiese; and one sister, Marilyn Carroll Blasé.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 494 N. Harrison Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard's honor to the McKay Dee Hospital Foundation to benefit the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
