Robert D. Hazen., D.D.S
Oh, how lovely was the crisp morning, the dawn of a glorious spring day, when Robert Dean Hazen, D.D.S., our daddy, grandfather, uncle, friend, and neighbor slipped away peacefully from mortality on Friday April 30th, 2021. He returned home to his Heavenly Father and into the arms of his eternal companion, Connie, who preceded him in death three years prior. He missed her and grieved her absence every day. We know he is with her now and in joyous reunion with so many loved ones who were awaiting him. His last few days with us were joyful, surrounded by family, and many stories were told, laughter was plentiful, hugs and kisses were exchanged and even his darling puppy Queenie was able once again to crawl all over him and get the cuddles they both needed. He treasured the many friends he made over his lifetime, kept in touch, and gathered with them as often as he could. Dad and Mom kept their door unlocked and family and friends traipsed in and out with hardly a knock.
Dad was born on July 26, 1935 to Franklin K. Hazen and Rose Dean in Ogden, Utah. He was the youngest of five siblings, (three sisters and two brothers) with dad becoming the caboose a decade later! He attended Quincy Elementary and Lewis Junior High, graduating from his beloved Ogden High School, where he excelled in sports. He also had a musical side skillfully playing the piano and trombone. He was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Uruguay, Paraguay, and Peru. He loved the people and his mission and talked about them often. He conversed, even joked, in Spanish until the last. While attending Weber College, in Ogden, he met the love of his life, Connie Berlin. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple June 26, 1959, and then moved to Provo where he attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in sociology with a minor in chemistry.
He was accepted to several dental schools, choosing Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where he moved with his new bride and their first child, John. They made many friends. An outstanding student, he was inducted into the national dental honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon in 1964. He traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, for medical service training where his ROTC experience resulted in his being made commander of medical service training school. He then entered the U.S. Air Force with the rank of captain and the Hazens were stationed in Minot, North Dakota, where Elizabeth was born. In 1967 they moved back to Utah, settling in Bountiful. He hung out his shingle and opened his one room dental practice. Dad practiced for forty-four years. His patients and employees loved Dr. Hazen, with his soft touch, caring way and listening ear. His nickname was “painless”, and his dental work was second to none.
Jennifer and Rebecca were born completing his family. He was always willing to sacrifice to provide the best for his children and their success. One of Dad’s biggest dreams came true when the cabin in Island Park, Idaho, was built. There he enjoyed fishing, doing puzzles, driving down Moose Road in Montana and spending good times with his children and grandchildren.
Dad had an unwavering testimony of the gospel and lived his life by its principles. He served in many church callings including assistant to the president of his mission, counselor in the bishopric, various stake callings, and service in the Spanish name extraction program for two years, among others. He served with humility, patience, and love in all he did. No description would be complete without mentioning his love and passion for BYU. He held season basketball tickets for over forty years. It was always a good day if BYU won their game. Go Cougars!
