Robert John Carlson

April 21, 1955 - July 24, 2019

Our brother and dear friend, Robert "Bob" John Carlson returned to his wife and parents July 24, 2019 in North Ogden, Utah.

Bob was born April 21, 1955 in Los Angeles, California and raised by his parents Harold and Evelyn Hartkopf Carlson.

As a child, Bob enjoyed family vacations and learned to play golf, which became a life-long activity and joy in his life. In high school, Bob was the captain of his golf team. He pursued accounting studies after high school at a local university.

He is a loving generous friend to many. He will be remembered for his charming, witty, entertaining stories and cheerful personality.

Bob worked in accounting and was comptroller over accounting for years in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada. He was well respected as a professional and enjoyed a strong reputation as a person of integrity and a strong work ethic. Working for the Internal Revenue Service in Layton, Ogden, and Salt Lake City, he finished his career as an Enrolled Agent with IRS as a Tax Compliance Officer and served in the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (VITA/TCE) in Ogden.

Bob’s early years were challenged with an addiction to alcohol, which he overcame at age 32 and remained sober until his death. He was active with Alcoholics Anonymous and was always willing to mentor and serve many people throughout his life. He was active in many service and community activities including Care Chest in Reno, Nevada. He would refer to himself as “Homer Smith” (from “Lilies of the Field”).

Bob married the love of his life, Renee Marie Dechaine on October 29, 1983. They spent many happy years together including in Las Vegas, Reno, North Ogden and a vacation of a lifetime building many memories before her terminal illness.

In 2015, Bob joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in many callings and service activities. He served faithfully as a Sunday School and Primary Teacher and for the benefit of those receiving help from the Bishop’s Storehouse, he was a dedicated full-time Service Missionary in the Peach Orchard in Harrisville, UT. A highlight of his life was being sealed to his wife Renee in the Brigham City Temple on October 28, 2017.

He is survived by a brother, Richard Carlson of Snohomish, Washington and was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Evelyn, and wife Renee.
