Rodney Grant Garner
June 11, 1948 ~ February 18, 2018
Our hero, husband, father, grandpa, and beloved best friend, Rodney Grant Garner, of Pleasant View, UT, returned home to our Father in Heaven on February 18, 2018, as a result of complications from surgery.
Rod made his entrance into this world on June 11, 1948 in Ogden, UT. He was the eldest son of Navine (Roberts) and Grant Garner and lived a charmed boyhood life riding his horses, and being outside as much as he could. He loved animals and spending time in nature. Rod attended Weber High School and served as the Student Body President from 1965-66. He graduated from Weber State College with a degree in accounting.
He served for six months in the Army Reserves, followed by a two and a half year mission for the LDS Church in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Rod married his eighth grade sweetheart, and the love of his life, Mary Ann Barker Garner, on May 14, 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had five children and 21 grandchildren, each of whom are his “favorite”. His family was the center of his universe, and he prioritized spending lots of quality time with them. He loved fishing, bird hunting, skiing, traveling, relaxing at his cabin in Bear Lake or relaxing on a beach in Hawaii with his wife, children and grandchildren more than anything else in this world.
Rod was a friend to all, quick to give a sincere compliment, and sought out the good in people. He exemplified true Christ-like love, as he loved everyone “right where they were” in life. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and fulfilled many Church callings, including as a Bishop and Counselor in a Stake Presidency.
In 1973 Rod began working with his father-in-law at Mountain Alarm. Later, as President and CEO of Mountain Alarm, he grew the small family business to the 28th largest security company in America; that employs more than 275 people. He was passionate about his work, loved talking business, and motivating his family to find success.
Rod is survived by his eternal love, Mary Ann Barker Garner; his sweet and adoring mother, Navine Roberts; five children, Lisa (James) Clawson, Hollie (Samuel) Smith, Josh (Katie) Garner, Marc (Susan) Garner, and Eric (Jessica) Garner; 21 of the most amazing grandchildren; his brother, Brad (Jill) Garner; and two sisters, Jone (John) Olson and Jill Williams.
He was preceded in death by his father, R. Grant Garner.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Pleasant View 11th Ward Chapel, 3602 N 500 W. Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
