Shirley Ann Coles Whittier
June 4, 1928 ~ September 25, 2017
Beloved mother and friend, Shirley Ann Whittier, 89, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017. She was born on June 4, 1928, in Evanston, Wyoming, the daughter of Erma and Alton Coles.
After graduating from Evanston High, Shirley moved to Ogden, Utah, where she met Blaine Whittier. They were married on September 1, 1950, and raised three children together. Shirley retired from Hill Air Force Base.
Throughout her life, Shirley attended First Presbyterian Church, Washington Heights Baptist Church, and First United Methodist Church. Her church friends and pastors meant a lot to her and have shown her so much love and kindness, especially with their visits the last few years. Shirley’s faith never wavered, and she demonstrated her beliefs through her actions and her unconditional love for everyone she knew.
She enjoyed dancing with her husband, spending weekends fishing with her family at Flaming Gorge, cross-stitching beautiful treasures for her children and grandchildren, working on puzzles, watching Jazz games, and just being with her family. She loved the ocean and the mountains. Shirley set the bar high as a mother and a grandmother and had a knack for making each family member and friend feel special. Her great sense of humor did not fade as she aged, and she often caught medical workers off guard with her clever wit.
Shirley is survived by her children, Jill (Brad) Garner, Ogden; Brad (Melonie) Whittier, Ogden; and Joen (Dennis) Schultz, Fairfax, VA; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Barbara Nelson, Dennis Coles, Sharon Ludwig, Nancy Ressler, and J.R. Barnes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erma Schofield Coles, and Alton and Alice Coles; and her husband, Blaine Whittier.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1339 W 400 N Marriott-Slaterville, UT. Friends may visit with family at the church immediately following the service. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff and residents of Apple Village Assisted Living, the medical staff at McKay Dee Hospital, and especially Dr. Sutherland for his compassionate care throughout the years.
