Theodore Richard Steinhorst, Jr. (Ted) was born on Sept. 13, 1954 in Utica, New York to Theodore and Jean Steinhorst. Having a love of exploring forests, he started a forestry degree at Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks and finished at Utah State, where he received the nickname “Johnny Appleseed.” He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while at Utah State. He worked for the forest service in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, served a Church mission in Perth, Australia, and then moved to Salt Lake City.
He met Candy in Salt Lake City through their love of scuba diving and camping. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple April 16, 1988 and eventually settled in Layton. He went back to Utah State for a master’s in Instructional Design. Candy and Ted had three children who were the pride of his life. They enjoyed many road trips where they camped and explored nature through most of the 50 states.
Ted had a large heart and enjoyed helping people, whether stuck on the road or through his service with the Red Cross in Ogden. He was an active member in the Davis County Ham Radio Club. He also enjoyed fly fishing (tying his own flies), panning for gold, bow hunting, karate, feeding birds in the backyard, keeping aquarium fish, visiting graveyards, and doing genealogy. He was always proud when his Jeep was covered in mud after an off-road trip.
He will be remembered by his close friends and family for his humor, fake magic tricks, and contagious smile. His neighbors love the star he puts on his 70’ ham radio tower every Christmas. His children, nieces, and nephews remember what a good listener he was, offering sage advice and of course, his love of nature, history, and exploring, whether in mountains or deserts.
He died Dec. 2, 2020 from a rapid onset of leukemia in Ogden, UT. He is survived by his wife, Candy Steinhorst; children, Teddy Steinhorst III, Jennifer (Ammon) Vrooman, and John Steinhorst; granddaughter Bonny Jean Vrooman; mother Jean Steiner, sisters Diane (Daniel) Rossi, Laurie Steinhorst (Bill) Nagle. Preceded in death by his father Theodore Steinhorst.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who took care of Ted at McKay-Dee Hospital.
