A. Emmett McKinstry
WASHINGTON TERRACE a" Our beloved father and grandfather, Addis Emmett McKinstry, age 92, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2008.
He was born January 13, 1916 in Ogden to James Merrell McBeth and Ida Elizabeth Butterfield McKinstry. He was raised and educated in Ogden. While working at a gas station he met his beloved wife, Ruth Jensen, who worked at the nearby Paramount Ice Cream Shop. They were married May 5, 1942 and enjoyed 39 happy years together before Ruth''s passing in December of 1981. He lovingly cared for her, never leaving her side during her last two years of illness.
He entered the U.S. Army in December of 1942 serving at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and then in Europe with the 9th Armored Division until the end of World War II.
Emmett was trained as an auto mechanic under the G.I. Bill and worked for Modern Body and Fender for six years. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in 1977.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. He continued to camp with his children at Island Park every year until last summer. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his choosing of special birthday cards for each child and grandchild. He will also be remembered for his kindness and very caring and thoughtful ways. He took care of his friends and neighbors for many years even with his limitations of health. He willingly helped his children with remodeling and other projects and could solve any problem they faced. He could fix anything he put his mind to and shared that talent with everyone.
Emmett resided in Washington Terrace where he kept an immaculate yard and home. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Young Men''s secretary.
He endured many physical challenges in the past several years but faced each with dignity and a positive attitude. He was always a very kind and loving person to his family and friends and all he met.
Emmett is survived by his sons and daughter, Dennis (Kris) of North Ogden; Bob (Julie) of Syracuse; and Diane (Billy) Greer, of Mtn. Green; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Connie Bartz, Ronert Park, CA; Elizabeth (Ben) Quinn, Ogden; Avon (Ray) Wiese, Ogden; and Katherine Soleberg, Bakersfield, CA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved Ruth, his brother Merrill, and his sisters Blanch Cranor and Ellen Meikle.
His family expresses their gratitude to Dr. Seth Lewis, the staff of Legacy House in Washington Terrace, Ogden Regional Medical Center TCU unit and Applegate Hospice who lovingly served him. We also express a special thanks to Beverly and Cheryl who lovingly cared for him in his home.
All who knew him loved him. Through his example to all of us we have truly learned what it means to endure to the end.
