Afton Briggs Galbraith
KAYSVILLE a" Afton Briggs Galbraith, 87, passed away at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City on Monday, September 21, 2009.
She was born July 29, 1922 in Bountiful, Utah, to Amos Archie and Elnora May Grant Briggs. She was raised on the family farm in Bountiful, Utah and graduated from Davis High School in 1940. Afton graduated from the L.D.S. Business College.
On November 29, 1943, Afton married Dean Webster Galbraith in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have lived in Kaysville since their marriage and raised their family there. Afton was an outstanding homemaker. She was an excellent cook and loved to prepare her signature turkey and apple pie at Thanksgiving. She enjoyed gardening and was known for her beautiful flowers, especially her roses. After her family was grown she worked for the Tanner Clinic in Layton and also for the Federal Government at Hill Air Force Base.
During their retirement years, Afton and Dean spent winters at their home in St. George, Utah, where they enjoyed the company of many good friends. They were charter members of the Pooped Hens/Exhausted Roosters Club and cherished the life-long friendships that resulted from this association.
Afton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings during her lifetime. She appreciated the visits from her ward and stake representatives to her home during her last few years. The family extends great appreciation to Brian and Mary Tarbet for their kindness and support.
Afton is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Dean Webster Galbraith, two sons, Kent D. (Nancy) Galbraith, Syracuse; and Carl B. Galbraith, Kaysville; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Helen Evans, Blackfoot, Idaho, and a sister-in-law, Jetta Briggs, Bountiful.
Afton was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Linda Galbraith Gallacher, brother, Grant Briggs, sisters, Wanda Asay and Maxine Duerden.
The family wishes to express deepest appreciation to Dr. William Dunson, the staff of the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics, and the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute for their outstanding care and compassion. They would also like to thank the many friends and neighbors in West Kaysville for the years of friendship and love shown to Afton and Dean.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Barnes Park Ward Chapel, 200 No. and Flint St. in Kaysville with Bishop Reed Ferrin, officiating. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main and Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Afton''s name to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
