He is deeply loved and will be missed more than words can describe. He was our rock and lived a healthy and active life right up until the end. Al was born in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in a strong and loving Sicilian family. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army before moving to San Jose to work and to start a family. Al worked for the Mercury News as the chief photographer and later as editor for 25 years. He had a very successful career and covered everything from the Olympics, Bing Crosby Pro Am, to the Angela Davis and Patty Hearst cases. He had a talent for capturing special moments through the lens of his camera and for connecting with everyone he met. He remained in close contact with his friend and long-time co-worker at the Mercury, Dave Milton.
After retiring from the Mercury News, Al started his own business, Superior Color Lab in Willow Glen. His second retirement took him to Utah, where he continued to stay active and made frequent trips to San Jose to spend time with his family.
Al is survived by Delores, his devoted and loving wife of 50 years; daughters, Donna Milo (Nick) and Michele Guiterrez (Greg); sons, Mike and Scott Hansen; brother, Leo; grandchildren, Nicholas Milo, Anthony and Paul Magazu, Ricky and Joey Hansen; nephews, Pete (Janie) and Leo (Kathy) Magazu and their children.
