Alan Richard Canfield
Our loving Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend returned to our Heavenly Father, early Monday morning June 3, 2013, to begin his new journey.
Alan was born on February 4, 1935 in Montpelier, Idaho to loving parents, Frank Willet and Dorothy W. Bryden Canfield. Alan was raised in Idaho and Utah, settling in the Ogden area. Alan played the tuba, tennis, football, and basketball. He had a real mean serve and a nasty spin on that tennis ball. Alan was a very brilliant man. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1959 with Bachelor Degrees in Geology and Engineering. He was an avid BYU fan.
He worked for Thiokol/ATK for 42 years, retiring in 2001. He consulted for ATK, NASA, and the Department of Defense for several years after retiring. While at Thiokol, Alan developed nozzle designs used by the Department of Defense, for the Minuteman and Peacekeeper missiles, NASA for the Space Shuttle, and other rocket nozzle designs. He was given several awards from NASA and the Department of Defense for his work with nozzle designs and aeronautical engineering. He was given the Silver Snoopy Award from NASA for his excellent and tireless service.
Alan was very involved in his children''s lives and enjoyed many memorable experiences with his family. He coached little league football teams in North Ogden. He loved every minute teaching these young boys to play football and remained in contact with some of these young men throughout his life. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings during his life.
He was an avid golfer and loved the time he spent on the course. He played many courses but his favorite was The Barn in Pleasant View, where he hit a hole in one. He played with The Barn''s Men''s Golf Association and developed many friendships throughout the years.
Alan met and married Mary Carol Woodhouse and together they had 5 children. Alan and Carol later parted ways.
He met Sally Garrett, the love of his life, in 1991 on a trip to Virginia to present a paper at Langley Air Force Base. They were married on December 2, 1991. Sally''s son John shared a special bond with Alan and he will forever be his second son. Sally and Alan spent the last 22 years traveling, golfing, attending the pop concerts, spending time with family and friends, and caring for each other. Their love and tenderness towards each other is a shining example to all who knew them.
Alan is survived by his wife, Sally; and their 6 children, Sharon (Scott) Proctor; Scott (Joy) Canfield; Connie (John) Alexander; Susen (John) Chapman; Terri Dana and John (Maggie) Garret; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and his Persian cat, Mikey. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Frank; nephew, Frankie; granddaughter, Minyon and grandson, Joshua Erik.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
