Alden "Dean" Martinez

Alden “Dean” Martinez

Alden, 58, of Clearfield, Utah, returned to our Father in Heaven on August 18, 2016 at 12:03 p.m., due to unexpected health issues.  By his side were his daughters and beloved wife, “Babe”.

Alden was born September 4, 1957 in Austin, Texas to Alfredo Martinez and Mary Vasquez.  He is the youngest of six children. Alden graduated from Round Rock High School. He later married Stana Lee Barnes on June 25, 1980 in Layton, Utah. They were sealed a year later, in the Salt Lake City Temple.  Together they had five beautiful daughters, who he called his “boys”.

Alden was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as a Cub Scout Leader, 2nd Counselor in the Presidency of the Chancellor Gardens Branch, and Stake Sports Director; among many other callings. Alden also served his mission in Salt Lake City, Utah. After his mission, he returned home in Texas for only a couple of weeks and moved to Utah to attend Weber State University, where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Social Science, from Utah State University.

Alden spent his career as a Juvenile Probation Officer, mostly in Ogden, Utah. After he retired he began to teach part-time at Eagle Gate College in Layton for the next several years.

Alden loved his family very much and enjoyed the time spent together. He loved watching the grandkids, but would always joke that he would rather be watching puppies. Alden loved to crack jokes and make people laugh. He enjoyed going four wheeling, shooting at the gun range, and playing cards.

Alden was known for his cooking and always cooked enough for the whole neighborhood. He would also spend a lot of time creatively “fixing” things.

He enjoyed doing things for his daughters, especially when they were helping and learning how to do it along the way. He raised his daughters to be strong, independent, and hard working women.

Alden is survived by his five children, DeAnna (Josh) Cluff; Tamarah Martin; Kristy Martinez; Tracie Martinez; and Marti (Dre) Lloyd; his siblings, Gloria (Warren) Ates, Eva Astran, Sally (Omar) Benites, Alvino (Andrea) Martinez, and Evelyn (Jesse) Gutierrez, his mother-in-law, Effie Barnes; his twelve grandchildren, and many loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Vasquez and Alfredo Martinez, and his father-in-law, Orval Barnes, and several other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Major Meadows Ward, 800 E. 2150 So. Clearfield, Utah.  Friends may visit family Sunday  August 21, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road Layton, and Monday, August 22, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m at the church.
