Alec Unsicker

May 4, 1998 — September 30, 2018

“It’s not the strength of the body, but the strength of the spirit,” JR Tolkien wrote. Alec Jenkins Unsicker had a mighty spirit.

Alec returned home to his Heavenly Father after a ten- year battle with cancer. He left this world a much better place than when he found it. A true disciple of Jesus Christ, in the midst of his own suffering he used his time and talents to bless the lives of those around him.

Diagnosed as a 10-year-old, Al’s life was an endless round of debilitating medical procedures and often pain. When he could, he loved reading, especially “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter”.  Other favorite pastimes include, Broadway musicals, attending Comic Con, watching his shows, collecting Funko figures and playing games with his family. When doctors conceded there was nothing further they could do to conquer Alec’s cancer, he comforted others by quoting Albus Dumbledore, blogging, “Death is but the next great adventure.”

Al was not content to lie around waiting to leave this world. As Gandalf said, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Alec created the AJU Foundation and delivered Smiles packages to more than 130 other cancer patients. His goal was to try to make their days a little brighter. Each package was custom made, filled with toys or services, appearances by sports heroes or other memorabilia requested by the patient. Al filled his days with service until he literally could not take another step.

Alec is welcomed home by family members, Karl Savage, Braxton Wills, great grandparents and great aunts and uncles.

Alec is survived by his parents, Brad and Sundee Unsicker of Syracuse, and his siblings Tyler (Lynae) Unsicker, Ellensburg, Washington; Breanne (John) Evans, Syracuse;  Lyndee (Robbie) Mower, (Syracuse);  Riley (Eun Hea) Unsicker (Murray) and Braydon ( Malia ) Unsicker, (Provo); his grandparents,  (Larry and Paige Webb) and (Richard and Cleo Unsicker)  and ( 8 )  nieces and nephews whom he cherished. Camden, Corbin, Reid, Drew, Maxine, Evelyn, Lucie, and Oakley.

We, Alec’s family are grateful to our extended family members, friends, neighbors, fellow cancer patients and medical teams, but we think Alec says it best …

“I love all of you so much and I want you to know how grateful I am for all the love and support you have given me these past twenty years and I will be waiting for every single one of you on the other side of the veil to give you the biggest hugs.”- Alec
