Alice Stephens
NEWTON, North Carolina - Alice Maxine Berg Stephens, 81, of Newton, NC, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
Born November 20, 1926 in Ogden, Utah, she was the daughter of the late Carl Knudsen and Echo Hortense Nebeker Berg. She was a graduate of Ogden High School in 1944 and Dee Memorial Hospital Nursing School in 1947. She was in the Cadet Nurses Corps during WWII. She worked as an operating room nurse and served as a member of the Stake Primary Board in Ogden, UT in 1950. In 1955 she married Keith Stephens and they moved to Michigan, and then to Madison, NJ. She was a member of the Singing Mothers at the New York World’s Fair. She was a night supervisor at King James Nursing Home. She moved to Sylva, NC in 1977 where she was a private duty nurse and then moved to Newton, NC in 2001. Throughout her life she was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alice was a good listener and a sweet, kind loved one and a friend to everyone.
Surviving are her husband, Keith Thomas Stephens, of Newton, NC; two daughters, Rebecca Alice Melonakos and husband Dave of Newton, NC; Karen Stephens Taylor and husband Wayne of Phoenix, AZ.; a son, Gregory Keith Stephens and wife, Mary Ann of Fort Worth, TX; a sister-in-law, Corrine Berg of Ogden, UT.; a brother, Ole Kent Berg and wife Myra of Salt Lake City, UT; 15 grandchildren, John Melonakos, Steven Melonakos, Eric Melonakos, Laura Melonakos, Cory Taylor, Aaron Taylor, Jeremy Taylor, Travis Taylor, Trina Taylor, Caroline Taylor, Andrew Stephens, Rachel Stephens, Sara Morrill, Jessica Stephens and Jason Stephens and foster grandson, Bill Mallett; and two great-grandchildren, David and Amy Melonakos. Two brothers, Lenis Berg and Carl Reuben “Rue” Berg preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 25, 2008 in North Carolina. Graveside services will be held Wednesday April 30, 2008 at 4 p.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery.
Friends may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Wednesday from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.
