Allen J. Frost
OGDEN – Allen J. Frost died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at McKay-Dee Hospital surrounded by his family, from heart and respiratory failure following a lengthy illness.
Allen was born December 24, 1923 in Ogden, the 11th of 12 children born to Gilbert and Mary Ann Moore Frost. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and served his country for three years during World War II from North Africa to Berlin. For three years following his discharge from the service, Allen was employed at Hill Air Force Base then worked as a salesman for the Ford Motor Company for over 50 years, including 20 years in Northern California.
Allen married Joy Brown in 1949, and they were married for 60 years before his death. They shared a love for their children and their many pets, and a loyalty and devotion to one another that endured through 60 years together. His family will always remember his gentle humor, silly jokes, bravery and generosity. We will miss him so very much.
Allen was an avid sportsman and coached Pop Warner and Little League sports. He was an excellent golfer, and enjoyed nothing better than to rattle around the course with his many golf partners young and old.
He had a quick wit, charming smile and an honesty and integrity that were admired by everyone who knew him. He learned many hard lessons in his life, and was always able to revise his opinions and vote his conscious. During the past 30 years, he changed his allegiance from moderate republican to a liberal democrat and environmentalist. He was a gruff, old warrior with dynamic energy and a loving, compassionate heart. His friends and family will always remember his ready sense of humor, silly jokes, generosity, and bravery in the face of illness and infirmary. We will miss Old Frosty so very much.
Although he struggled with mild dementia the past few years, he always tried his best to finish the daily crossword puzzle and to keep up with the news.
Allen is survived by his wife, Joy, his daughter, Marianne Frost-Higgins and son-in-law Paul Higgins, all of South Ogden; his son, Mark Allen Frost and daughter-in-law Carol Sterritt Frost of Kelseyville, CA.
Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Jerry F. and Ruth Frost, Arlene Gunderson, Bonnie Coates, and Marlene, Laura and Georgia Brown; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Burt, Earl, Lawrence, Charlie, Frank, James, Blaine, Norman, and sisters Shirley, Donna and Zina Frost and his brothers-in-law, Byron, Albert, Boyd, Kenneth and Albert Brown.
The family wishes to thank his nurses, Nicole and Karen, and the rest of the caregivers from Harmony House; Dr. Kim and nurse Leslie; and all others who cared for him at McKay-Dee Hospital.
Allen requested a simple funeral. Graveside services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
Following the service, a gathering for family and friends will be held at 4790 Burch Creek Drive, South Ogden, to celebrate his life.
