Allen E. Horsley
1920-2014
After 93 Septembers, Allen Edwin Horsley, passed away from complications of a stroke.
He was at his beloved home that he built on the back of his father’s farm in the 1950’s. He was born at home like the rest of the other three children, born to Arthur and Myrtle Jane Boulton Horsley, all four children have lived within a mile of the family farm.
A true child of the depression, Allen grew up working hard on his father’s poultry farm and in the apricot orchards. He so loved this time of year when the soft white petals fall to the ground like snow. He raced the fields to catch the Bamberger line every day to Davis High and entered the army to fight in WWII like all other young men from the surrounding farms. He was attached for training as a medic in California but was honorably discharged for a medical condition before being sent out to action.
To many he always appeared a shy and unapproachable man, but the truth was he had a serious hearing disability which made it harder to communicate with him. In 1952 he met and married Louise Schaller (on a mail order dating service – the forerunner to internet dating) and he began to build his lifelong home. He worked at Hill Air Force Base, Ft. Douglas and then the IRS as an accountant. He retired early because of his hearing. He and Louise lost a child at birth and eventually adopted one son, David Horsley. Louise died in 1986 and Allen married Margaret Hovermale Powell Angell in March of 1987. They had met at a grief support group. She died in 2008. He tenderly cared for both spouses at home before each of them died, and he had 25 wonderful years with each of them.
Allen is preceded in death by his parents, both spouses, his brother Gordon, his sister Edith and his sons Joseph and David. He is survived by his brother Fred Horsley, Bountiful; daughter-in-law, Julia Phillips-Horsley (Jerry Hales); Margaret’s daughters Barbara Hardman Hoagland (Warren), Redmond, UT; and Marilyn Powell, Greenhaven, AZ. Julia and Jerry have taken care of Allen for the last six years and are grateful to the VA for the services provided for elderly veterans.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. where friends may visit family from 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to services. Interment Lakeview Memorial Estates, 1640 E. Lakeview Dr. Bountiful. In lieu of flowers Julia and Jerry urge you to visit someone who is shut-in or difficult to talk to. Their lives are quite rich and you are missing something special.
