Allen Bruce Nelms of Waxahachie, Texas passed away November 8, 2019

Allen was born January 24, 1955, the son of Phillip and Loueria York Nelms in Italy, Texas. Allen graduated from Waxahachie High School and resided most of his life in Texas. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard, and married Josie Herrera Edwards in Waxahachie, Texas.

Allen enjoyed working on cars, fishing, riding his horse Buddy, and spending time watching movies at home with his wife and grandson Dontae Edwards Jr.  Allen was known throughout the community for helping others, especially the elderly and friends in the neighborhood. He was the primary caregiver for his wife through her battle with ALS until her passing. Allen had a great voice and was a regular church attendee, which included participation in the church choir.  Allen was a kind man with an infectious smile and had a teasing way with others.

Allen is survived by his siblings, Willie Marie (Ernesto) Nelms, Gwen Edwards, Wilma McGowan, Alvin (Debbie) Nelms, Phillip Nelms, Robert Nelms, and Anthony Nelms; sister-in-law, Johnnie Nelms; stepchildren, Dontae (Erica) Edwards and Jolenta Jones; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of Texas. Surviving Utah family include Arturo (Linda) Herrera, Marie (Mike) Neri, Joseph Herrera, Sally (Jimmy) Aguilar, Eddie Herrera, and Anna (Richard) Whitlock.

Allen was preceded in death by his loving wife, Josie; parents; brother, Larry Nelms; and sister-in-law, Bambi Herrera.

Funeral services were conducted at Jackson Chapel in Waxahachie, Texas.

Graveside services will be held on March 20, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Ogden City Cemetery  and officiated by Deacon Howard Schuyler of St Joseph’s Catholic Church where he will be buried next to his wife.
