OGDEN a€" Alvin Ray Carter was a man who loved life, his family, the gospel of Jesus Christ and his country. Alvin came into the world on September 11, 1925 blessing the family of John Furlsbury and Alice Marchant Carter. He was the seventh child of nine children. His last moments on earth were spent with family in the room he built. He died on Saturday, December 4, 2010.

He was born in Salt Lake City but lived most of his life in Ogden. After graduating from Weber High School in 1943, he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps. His service in the Marines during World War II included Iwo Jima and China.

Upon his return home, he was called to the Texas Louisiana Mission. Following this, he married ODille Huillet in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 28, 1950. They have four children, Kristen (Charles) Davidson, Terri (Roger) Fridal, Clay (Susan) Carter and John (Jill) Carter; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Alvin graduated from Weber College, then from USAC in 1953, with a bachelor''s degree and later a master''s degree from USU.

He accepted a job with the Boy Scouts of America in Safford, Arizona and attended their training at the Schiff Scout Reservation in New Jersey. A move back to Utah found him exchanging a scout uniform for a suit and tie to work in the Ogden City School District. His career included teaching at Mound Fort, Principal at Ogden High, Central, and Highland Middle Schools.

He had a great sense of humor and was a man of faith who lived a life of integrity.

Alvin was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was dedicated to his numerous church callings. He served as Scoutmaster, Sunday School teacher, High Councilman, Bishop, in the South Ogden Stake Presidency, a mission with his wife to the Tulsa, Oklahoma Mission, a Stake Service Mission and as a worker in the Ogden Temple.

He was a member of the Ogden Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He is an honorary member of the South Ogden City Fire Department and served as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two brothers, Ferrel (Ila Jean) Carter, Richard (Grace) Carter, and sisters, Almina (Jim) Slaydon and Carol (Julian) Operhal.

Preceding Alvin in death were his brothers Jack, Everett, and Clarence Carter.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 10 at 11 a.m. at the South Ogden 6th Ward Chapel, 4380 Orchard Avenue.

Family will greet friends at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. on Thursday, December 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday at the Ward Chapel 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
