Ann Herbert Buchanan
Ann Herbert Buchanan, age 92, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at the home of her daughter Jill B. Mecham in Broomfield, Colorado.
She was born in Salina, Utah March 6, 1918, the daughter of Charles Martin and Bertha Ann Nielsen Herbert. She married E. Dwain Buchanan in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple May 23, 1941.
Ann was raised and educated in Salina, Utah. Ann graduated from Salina High School where her musical talent brought her recognition and her life-long love of music began.
She attended BYU from 1936 to 1939 and graduated with a 3 year Normal Degree in Elementary Education. She later completed a Masters degree in Library Science.
Her teaching career began in 1939 in Koosharem, UT. It spanned 29 years teaching kindergarten through 6th grade in locations ranging from her hometown of Salina, to Roosevelt and eventually to Kaysville and Layton, Utah. She loved teaching and helping young minds progress. Her love of teaching inspired her daughter and two granddaughters to follow in her footsteps to become educators.
Ann was active in the LDS church and served in many callings throughout her life. Ann was elected as the first female City Council member in Kaysville history and served for 2 years from 1975 to 1977. She continued to be active in politics and served through her 90th year as an election judge for local elections.
Surviving are a son and daughter, Jack Dwain (Riet) Buchanan, Sacramento, California; Jill B. (Evan L.) Mecham, Broomfield, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Dwain Buchanan, three brothers, Leonard, Gillyard and Woodrow Herbert; and two sisters Veda Thompson and Fay Oldroyd.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Kaysville Crestwood LDS Church, 1039 East Crestwood. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main and Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Salina Pioneer Cemetery, at 5 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Deseret Heart Association at the LDS Hospital.
