Anna “Jeanne” Layton
KAYSVILLE - Anna “Jeanne” Layton, our beloved sister and aunt, arrived in this life on February 12, 1930 in Kaysville, Utah to the parents of Roy Ole Layton and Virginia Phillips Layton. She passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2008 of natural causes.
She felt fortunate to reside her entire life in the family home where she lived and played as a child. She spent countless hours caring for her beautiful yard in which she won many community awards for her efforts. As an avid gardener, almost half of her lot was planted in a variety of peonies that her mother and father planted when she was a young child. Her peonies were always a beautiful display every Memorial Day.
Education was always important to Jeanne. She was well educated with a Bachelor Degree in Library Science and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Utah.
She served as Director of Davis County Libraries with over 30 years of service. During her years as Director she was responsible for modernizing the county libraries, as well as, building of several branches of the Davis County Library System. Jeanne characterized herself “as a person who stands up for what I believe. I am definitely not a yes person.” Her personal belief of basic human rights in our country and the fight against censorship in public libraries won her several state and national recognition awards that include the Freedom to Read Foundation Roll of Honor, Robert B. Downs Award for Intellectual Freedom, Utah Library Association’s Distinguished Service Award, and the Mountain Plains Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Award.
Although she never married, she was strong in her love of family. She dedicated much of her life to the benefit and education of her nieces and nephews, extended family, and many others outside her family. For this, we would all like to say “thank you Jeanne for making our dreams possible.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Virginia Layton, sister-in-law, Jean Wheeler Layton, and niece, Kathleen Layton Ketcham.
She is survived by her brothers Dr. Thomas William Layton and Roy Ole Layton. Sister-in-law, Jenell Steed Layton, nephew, Craig Layton, nieces, Deborah Layton Normington and Lisa Layton.
