Annie Fraga

October 31, 1939 — March 28, 2021

On Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021, Annie R. Fraga passed away at the young age of 81. She was a reigning matriarch, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend… a true QUEEN to us all.

Annie was born on the most fabulous holiday of Halloween, October 31, 1939. Although she never finished her schooling, she was one of the smartest people we knew. She educated herself by reading cookbooks and using her upbringing to make meals that would stop anyone in their tracks. Her passion for cooking had everyone craving her famous chips and salsa.

A lover of Chinese food, Annie considered herself half-Chinese. When anyone would ask her where she wanted to go for lunch, you could bet it was one of three things: Chinese food, Olive Garden’s Chicken Alfredo, or a good burger. During summer time, you would find her at home, eating white rice with her garden tomatoes and chopped-up green chilis. Everything she ate had to be cooked “well done”. You could always count on her to say, “Pork chow mein, NO ONIONS. Make sure you tell them no onions. Did you tell them no onions?”

Arnold Fraga courted Annie while he picked tomatoes from her parents’ garden. They were only able to speak to one another while passing each other. Other times, they had conversations through the screen of her parents’ door. Arnold and Annie were later married on November 8, 1957.

It was important to Annie to make sure everyone knew she was thinking of them. She made it a point on everyone's birthday to call and sing “happy birthday”, even if it was on their voicemail. She loved sending her birthday cards and always writing “love you” with the words underlined, her way of emphasizing those words. She always had a way with her words and would love to learn new expressions. She was never afraid to say, “talk to the hand”, “shuuuut uuuupppppp”, “you better call me when you get home or I will kick your ass”, or “Jessssssssss”

. Annie deeply cared for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and made it a priority to ensure they knew how much she loved them. Throughout the years, she would babysit many of the family’s children along with friends of the family.

She loved her fur baby, Zapato, who is missing her as much as all of her family and friends are.

A big thank you to Mandy Fernandez, Aunt Bessie Mortensen, and Aunt Nina Reyna and all her children and grandchildren for their around-the-clock care.

Annie is preceded in death by her son James Fraga and her husband Arnold Fraga. She is survived by her sons Arnold Andy Fraga, Larry Fraga (Dwayne Atkinson), Jesse “Jay” Fraga, and Paul Freeland and her daughter Lori Freeland. Grandchildren Aj Fraga, Shae Fraga (Nate Scott), Chelsea Marie Freeland (Alex Eggleston), Dakota Freeland, and Kayden Freeland. Great Grandchildren Tyrece Holbrook, Issac Fraga, and Audric Scott and her fur baby Zapato.

The family would like to thank the staff and doctors at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and extend their deepest gratitude and love to the team at Rocky Mountain Care for their kind and compassionate care. In addition, Utah Cancer specialist Dr. Jason Stinnett, Dr. Nancy Weber, and Nurse Lisa. University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute, Dr. Kathryn Maurer and everyone at Midland Pharmacy.

In honor of her memory, the family would appreciate donations to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in her name.

Annie Fraga’s legacy shall live on forever through the connections she had with those she engaged with as well as her children.
