ANTHONY (TONY) HOPSON
1937-2015
Anthony (Tony) Hopson, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend left this earthly life on April 16, 2015 at his home in Bountiful, Utah, hand in hand with his eternal companion of almost fifty five years.
Tony was born on March 13, 1937 in New Haven Connecticut to Edward Taylor and Phyllis Cretella Hopson. He spent the first 18 years of his life in New Haven, where he grew up with his younger brothers Edward and Alan and attended school. At age 18, Tony enlisted in the US Marine Corp and proudly served the country that he dearly loved. While stationed in Port Lyautey, North Africa, he earned the “Marine of the Month” award. A special time in his life occurred while serving in North Africa; he was converted to and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Tony treasured his membership in the church and had a strong, unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was an active member of the church throughout his life. He served in many callings including ward and stake athletic director, ordinance worker in the Bountiful, Utah Temple, member of the Bishopric in the Bntfl 24 th Ward, and Home Teacher extraordinaire. He never missed an opportunity to volunteer and participate in service projects. The example he showed while serving others did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corp, Tony made the trek west to attend Brigham Young University. He married the love of his life, Nancy Ruth McNalley, on June 4, 1960 in Rock Springs, Wyo. Soon after marrying, they moved to Salt Lake City where Tony continued his education by attending electronics school. Tony and Nancy solemnized their marriage on June 2, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Tony and Nancy are the parents of two children: Steven Anthony and Jana Lee. Tony’s children and grandchildren are bright spots in his life. He enjoyed all family gatherings, vacations and activities. With his great sense of humor he was always trying and usually succeeding in being the comedian of the family.
Tony worked as a civilian at Hill Air Force Base for 30 years, spending many years working on weapons and radar systems of F-16 fighter jets. After retiring from HAFB he worked as a school crossing guard as well as a security guard for the “Touched by an Angel” television series. He found this job interesting, fun and rewarding.
To say that Tony loved sports is an understatement. He enjoyed playing most sports; especially basketball, baseball, and softball. He was a sports official for 28 years and was a member of the Utah High School Activities Association. He was a true blue BYU fan and avid Utah Jazz fan. He was always loyal to the New York Yankee baseball team. He enjoyed boating, waterskiing fishing and camping with his family and friends. Tony was a faithful blood donor for many, many years-giving blood every 8 weeks. His blood was CMV negative which could be given to newborn babies. Only 20% of the U.S. population is CMV negative.
Tony is preceded in death by his parents and parents’ in-law. Survived by his loving wife Nancy; son Steven (Francesca), Halli (Sean), Hilari (Austin), Harrison; daughter Jana Lee Adams, Branson, Olivia Carlisle.
