Apostolos Paul Harames

OGDEN - Apostolos (Paul) Harames, longtime resident of Ogden, passed away at his daughter''s home in Vacaville, California on Thursday, April 12, 2007, of causes incident to age.

He was born May 11, 1915 in Manhattan, New York City, the eldest of five children of John A. and Pipina (Josephine) Hlahlas Harames. At age five, his family moved from New York City to Ogden, Utah, where he spent most of his remaining years. He attended schools in Ogden City School District: Grant School, Central Jr. High and graduated from Ogden High School in 1933.

He met his wife on the tennis court. He won many trophies competing locally and statewide in tennis. He married Josephine Bailey January 3, 1942. Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the Army Air Corps and then later as a Personnel Specialist. He was discharged in October, 1943, shortly after his first son was born. His avid passion was tennis; he worked his way through college on tennis scholarships, first at Weber Academy (now Weber State University) and then graduated from Utah State University in 1939 with a degree in forestry, biology and zoology.

Paul worked at the Ogden Mail Terminal, sorting mail most of his working career. He had a great love for trains and made sure his family had opportunities to visit the Ogden RR Depot often. He taught his grandsons the art of playing good tennis and enjoyed many hours on the tennis courts competing himself and then later watching his grandsons play tennis. He also loved the outdoors, taking his children on walks, hikes and camping out. He had a "knack" with plants and with animals. He adored his children, and their families. Many fond family memories center around Dad, Grandpa and G-Grandpa''s wry sense of humor and unconditional love.

He later joined the LDS Church; his marriage was solemnized in the SL Temple in November of 1948. He remained an active member of the LDS Church, having fulfilled an Ogden Greek Regional Mission and in 1976 fulfilled a Family History Mission to Greece furthering family history and fostering his Greek heritage. He served as High Priest Group Assistant and also performed many ordinance hours in the Ogden Temple.

He was active at Golden Hours Senior Center, Senior Kiwanis and won the national Carnation award for the many service hours he spent in others'' behalf.

Surviving are his children, J. Paul (Sheryl) Harames, Hooper, UT; JoAnn Shively, Vacaville, CA; Mary (R. Farrel) Farnes, Boise, ID; and Curtis U. (Mary) Harames, Ogden, UT; 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife (Josephine), his mother and father (John A & Pipina), his son, William Dennis, his son-in-law, Charles R. Shivel and his siblings, Maria Pappas, Anastasia (Tessie) Cornia, Spiro (Speedo) Harames and Eugenia (Babe) Anderson.
