Ardis Marie Reading

November 12, 1944 — April 8, 2025

Ardis Marie Vettlin Reading, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. After her fourth valiant battle with cancer, she slipped into eternity surrounded by loved ones. Ardis was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She leaves behind a legacy of love and service to others.

Ardis was born to Arthur Vettlin and Elenora Pichler on November 12, 1944, in Seattle, Washington. She lived in the Seattle area for most of her childhood and attended Lake Washington High School before moving to Utah at the age of 17. In Utah, she spent her senior year at Davis High School, graduating in 1962. Following high school, Ardis attended Weber State College, majoring in English. While in Utah, Ardis lived in Clearfield, Sunset, Roy, Ogden, and then made her final home of 50 years in West Point.

She met the love of her life, Weston Reading, while working together at the Defense Depot of Ogden. They married on a snowy Saturday, February 12, 1966, in Ogden, UT. Together, they were loving and devoted parents to three children. Ardis loved being home with her children and was a phenomenal mother. When her children grew old enough to go to school, she took a job working at West Point Elementary School. She performed in many capacities over the years, including roles as lunchroom lady, playground supervisor, and, finally, SEM advisor for gifted and talented students. She loved working with the children of West Point and endeared herself to many. Former students often tell of their fond memories of time spent with her.

Ardis was always a woman of faith. As a child she was drawn to religion and attended several different churches. She loved listening to Sunday School lessons and stories from the scriptures. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on April 25, 1981, and spent the rest of her life being a devoted member to the faith. Wes and Ardis were sealed for time and eternity in the Ogden Temple on November 22, 1985. She served in many church callings over the years, but she always loved teaching children in Primary. She also enjoyed overseeing the ward’s humanitarian services committee where she helped to produce and distribute innumerable quilts and craft kits. Ardis found great joy in serving and helping others.

Ardis loved the outdoors and was happiest when in the mountains. She and Wes enjoyed hiking the many trails of the Uintah Mountains and fishing in the cold lakes and streams there. A talented writer, she often wrote poetry and anecdotes and published a history of West Point Elementary School titled “Remembering the Good Old Days.” Other hobbies included drawing, sewing, crocheting, and quilting. During the summer and fall, she could be found busily canning the fruit and vegetables from Weston’s always bountiful garden. She loved animals and adored the numerous cats who found their way to her home over the years. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. Her children and grandchildren cherish the golden memories of time spent with her. All who knew her loved her.

Ardis is survived by her husband Weston; son, Russell Reading; daughters Lynne (Neal) Hyde and Debra (David) Butters; beloved grandchildren, Terin, Caleb, Derrick, Katelyn, Kyle, and Savanna; sisters, Kasey (Sam) Brace, Lynda Kamarainen, and Carol Naron; stepmother, Judy Vettlin; and many loved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Katheryn Jones, and nephew, Kristopher Haugen; and her uncle and aunt, Pete and Barbara Kling, who loved her as their own.

The family would like to thank the staff at Family Tree Assisted Living and A Plus Hospice for their exceptional loving care.
