Arland Peterson

March, 27 1923 ~ December 2, 2019

Arland Peterson, 96, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2019, at the George E. Wahlen Nursing Home surrounded by family. He was born March 27, 1923, at his family’s home in Pleasant View, Utah to Nephi and Lydia Peterson. He was the only boy and third youngest child of nine. All eight sisters adored and spoiled him. As a boy, he worked on the family farm and loved to show off his cows. At the tender age of ten, he lost his mother due to a disease called Quincy. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Reno, Nevada where he lived with his sister, Thora, and her husband, Carl. There he attended and graduated from high school and played on the high school baseball team, his favorite sport.

Following graduation, Arland enlisted into the U.S. Army where he served just over three years and fought in the monumental Battle of Normandy. After returning home and while sporting his eye-catching convertible down the streets of Ogden, UT, a beautiful young woman caught his eye. He nearly drove over the curb to catch that soon-to-be love of his life, Gayle Olsen. After a short courtship, they were married in 1948. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, UT temple. Together they raised six beautiful children.

Arland worked over 30 years for the Utah State Department of Transportation (UDOT) as a civil engineer. After retirement, Arland served as a school crossing guard, and he tended to twelve miniature horses (reportedly ten too many). He suffered from Parkinson’s disease for many years. Gayle cared for him as long as possible until it was time for him to take residence at a nearby nursing home. Our deepest thanks go to the staff of the George E. Wahlen Nursing Home who cared and loved him. Special thanks go out to Debbie Michaelson for her extra special love and care.

Arland is survived by his wife, Gayle, and five children; Cory Peterson, Teri DeMoor (Andre), Rob Peterson (Marilyn), Bud Peterson (Jodi), and Steve Peterson (Mandy). He has 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters; Laura Smith, Lucille Field, Elna Brown, Erna Anderson, Thora Phillips, LaVon Phillips Wilson, Maurine Burnett, and Norma Gibbs; and his youngest daughter Jan Peterson. Arland loved his family deeply and will be greatly missed.
