Arlee Petersen Steele
June 30, 1920 ~ April 8, 2014
Arlee Petersen Steele passed away April 8, 2014 of natural causes. She was the first child of Gus and Edna Petersen, born on June 30, 1920. Her sister Carol arrived 13 years later on Arlee’s birthday, June 30, 1933. Arlee attended and graduated from Granite High School, Salt Lake City, Utah.
She would first meet Norm in June 1937. Friendship would soon turn to love, and she married Norm on October 15, 1937. Their first son, Michael, was born in November 1940, followed by two more sons, Tom and Brad, in five-year intervals. Following Norm’s return from Asiatic, Pacific operations in World War II, they moved to Ogden, where they would reside for the rest of their lives. She is survived by her husband, Norm; three sons, Michael (Janet), Tom (Jennifer), and Brad (Julie).
Her only sibling, Carol, passed away on December 5, 2005.
Arlee was a very talented seamstress, and would sew and knit many items of apparel for her grandchildren. She was an avid reader and devoted endless hours to sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and creating beautiful ceramic pieces. She became a consummate artist in the crafting of counted cross-stitch. Some of her undertakings would require three months to a year to complete. Many pieces were gifted to family and friends.
Norm was a golf addict, and finally convinced Arlee that she could and would enjoy this wonderful sport. She was a quick study and played the game so well she made the Ben Lomond ladies’ golf team. This allowed her to play a number of beautiful golf courses along the Wasatch Front. When Arlee and Norm traveled, golf gear was always in the car trunk, and they would play many spectacular golf courses in their journeys to Georgia, Kentrucky, and Carolinas, and all of the eleven western states.
Arlee was a participant in both ladies’ singles and mixed team bowling. It was indeed special when one year they became the oldest team to win a league championship.
She loved to garden and nurtured a lifelong passion for flowers of every variety and season, which made their home landscaping a show-stopper throughout spring, summer, and fall.
She and Norm enjoyed many friends and visitors as guests in their home. It seemed that their dance card was always full.
Mike and Janet reside in Cincinnati, Tom and Jen in Denver, and Brad and Julie in Ogden. Arlee loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and had a special bond with Julie and Jennifer, her daughters-in-law.
She was very proud of her wonderful and loving marriage to Norm, which spanned a period of 76 ½ years. Time never diminished their love and respect for each other. Norm was a very involved person, being active in so many causes of helping people. Arlee would support his efforts in every way. She was always available to help family and friends when asked. She was truly a special lady, and she will be missed by her adoring family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
