Arlene Handy Badger
1930-2016
Arlene Handy Badger, 85, died at Legacy House of Bountiful in the arms of her children Saturday, January 2, 2016. She was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Arlene was born February 28, 1930 in Heyburn Idaho, the second child and only daughter of Ernest W and Edith (Bailey) Handy. She grew up on farms around Heyburn and for a while in a CCC Camp along Three Creek, Idaho where her father taught boys to survey and build roads and ranch improvements. She had an array of farm and kitchen chores but family life also included plenty of travel and camping-- often with cousins in a model T school bus decked out for cooking and sleeping. She attended Heyburn High School enjoying sports, school dances and church outings. In 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Glen Larson Badger, in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.
After finishing university classes at Utah State University, the couple moved to Salt Lake and began a life centered around family, church and eventually starting a small sales business. In 1966 they moved their growing family and business to a new home in Bountiful. She loved welcoming others and the home quickly became a center for celebrating with extended family, hosting out of town relatives, sharing with church members and entertaining grandchildren. Besides working in the family business, she was a longtime voting judge, joined with friends to create a catering service and served several terms as a Republican State Delegate.
Arlene filled many church callings in the LDS Primary, Young Women’s and Relief Society programs as well as being a long time visiting teacher, greeter at Temple Square and ordinance worker in the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples.
Arlene is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother LaDell. She is survived by children Susan, Janice, Cindy, Kermit (Taunya), Bradley (Christine), and Holly; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and brothers Gerald (Lois), Duane (Beverly) and sister-in-law Carol.
Services to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Mueller Park 1st Ward Chapel, 1800 South 800 East, Bountiful. A visitation will be held at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N 400 East, on Friday, January 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at Bountiful City Cemetery.
