On June 1, 2022, Athleen Joyce Rice, 87, our beautiful, beloved, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, and friend, was greeted in Heaven by her mother and daddy; her 4 siblings; her daughter, Connie Lee Thompson; grandsons, Joshua Leslie Hansen, and Christopher Leon Thompson; granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Aranda; and great-grandson, Dylan Scott Aranda.
Athleen was born at home, on May 21, 1935, a twin daughter of Carl and Arvilla Hurst Slater in Ogden, Utah. She was raised and educated in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School in 1953.
She met Morris Leon Edwards on Walgreens Corner in Ogden right after he returned home from the Korean War. They were married November 6, 1953, and resided in Sunset where they raised their 5 daughters. They later divorced. She married Clyde Rice and they divorced.
For many of those early years she dedicated herself to her family and home. During this time, she began her 37-year career as a server and cook in many Ogden area restaurants with her twin, Cathleen.
She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and was disappointed they didn’t make it past the first round of the playoffs this year. She loved to bowl and was a baton twirler with her twin in her younger days, carrying the banner during the Pioneer Days parade. She loved spending time with her family while supporting them in all their activities. She loved to go camping, boating, spending time at Bear Lake and Powder Ridge.
She leaves behind her daughters, Kari Story, Ogden, Kathie (Brian) Hull, Syracuse, Sherrie Hansen, Ogden, and Vickie (Nate) Webster, Ogden; son-in-law, Chris Thompson, Sparks, NV; 14 grandchildren: Candy (Terrance) Hamblin, J.D. Aranda, Kevin (Sandy) Webster, Monica Hansen, Alicia (Trey) Cherry, Austin (Brenden Lund) Hull, Justin (Jessica) Hull, Masyn Story, and Heather Hull;16 great-grandchildren: Logan Helsing, Taisee Aranda, William Helsing, Edward Helsing, J.J. Ashley, Taten Aranda, Indiana Hamblin, Karston Hull, Kalynn Whitehead, Kooper Hull, Kynlee Hull, Kaius Cherry, Nicol Story, Michael Webster, Kennedy Hull, Aerith Webster; and 23 grand-dogs.
Her family would like to extend our love and appreciation to Annette, Stacy, and the staff of Applegate Hospice for their special care of Athleen.
A special thank you to Austin and Brenden, for going above and beyond, and opening your home and your hearts, and for your love and care of Grandma.
