Barbara Katheryn (Kay) Green was born in Devils Lake, ND on November 12, 1913 (11-12-13), one of six children born to Mathias and Barbara Hepfner. At a young age Kay and her family moved to Great Falls, Montana, where she attended the local schools.
In 1928 at the age of 15 she worked part time for Hagan''s Bakery in Great Falls, Montana and a year later taking a full time position with Ideal Laundry where she worked for 16 years.
In December of 1942 Kay met Delmas Green at a dance at the Army Air Base near Great Falls, Montana. Delmas was stationed there before he was sent overseas during WWII. They were married on June 7, 1944 in Montana. Upon Delmas return they started building their home in Layton in 1946. They lived in the basement until 1950 when the top floor was completed. This is the home where Delmas and Kay raised their four children.
Kay worked at Sierra Lingerie in Ogden and IRS Center for a couple of tax season''s, she worked for several years at Marquarts at Freeport Center, Clearfield, Utah. In 1969 she started her favorite job, babysitting her grandchildren.
Kay''s family was most important; she enjoyed time spent with her family on many special occasions. She loved to fish, and weekends would find her and Delmas loading the camper for another fishing trip to Wyoming. Most times with one or two grandkids tagging along. Kay and Delmas always had a large garden and several fruit trees that meant lots of canning in the fall and sharing with neighbors. Nothing ever went to waste. Kay loved baking, gardening, canning, embroidering, quilting and sewing. She made quilts and afghans for all her children and grandchildren. Kay had a special cookie jar that was always filled with fresh baked cookies ready for anyone that came to visit.
Kay was known fondly to many as the "East Layton Worm Lady", as she supplied night crawlers to generations of fishermen, creating many lasting friendships over the past 47 years. She enjoyed meeting and talking to all that stopped by.
Kay has been an active member of the local Catholic Church since she moved to Utah. At that time services were held in the old fire station, until a Church was built. Kay was the oldest member of Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Layton.
Kay is survived by her children Bob (Mary) Green, Barbara (Bill) Bennett and Ed (Roxanne) Green of Layton; Arleen (Dan) Nalder of Lewiston, Utah. She has 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. One very special sister-in-law Martell Green of Layton; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
