Barbara Lou Jones died at the age of 89 on December 23, 2023.
She was born to Ruth Larson in Boise, Idaho.
She met her husband, Byron Jones as he was serving in the military during
the Korean War. He was stationed in Shreveport, LA where Barbara was
living with her parents. They flew to Salt Lake City to be married in the Salt
Lake Temple. He was on the ship going to Korea when the Armistice was
signed. Barbara cried when she found out since that meant he would be
safe.
Barbara was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints. She had many different callings including serving in the Primary
Presidency in several capacities, as a teacher in the Relief Society and
Primary and other callings as needed. She also enjoyed serving as a
visiting teacher.
Barbara was married right after graduating from High School. She had
always wanted a big family but was only able to have two children. When
her daughter started elementary school, Barbara started attending college.
It took her several years of attending school in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma,
and Utah but she was finally able to graduate from the University of Utah in
Social Work with her Bachelor’s degree. A few years later she also earned
a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Barbara worked as a Social Worker for
twenty years before retiring to help care for some of her grandchildren.
Barbara and her husband made sure the grandchildren had music lessons
and practiced. They took care of the grandchildren after school and during
the summer. Barbara always made sure there were snacks available.
Barbara is remembered for making Halloween costumes for all of her
grandchildren, providing snacks and a place to stay overnight with and
without the cousins. She always made sure that the grandchildren had new
clothes for the start of the school year.
Barbara was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her children and
grandchildren. She made beautiful quilts which are still enjoyed by her
family members.
Barbara also enjoyed knitting and made sure that all of her children and
grandchildren had afghans to keep them warm.
Barbara is survived by one brother-in-law, Ralph Jones, and one sister-in-
law, Janet Little; her children, Dennis Jones and Julie Ord (Craig); eight
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
