Barbara LaPorte Manis returned home on November 11th, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on March 10th, 1944 to her parents Jake and Nora LaPorte of Selma, Alabama, where she spent her youth and young adult life. Barbara was the youngest of 8 children and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her siblings and extended family members. She was a true Alabama girl at heart and had the southern accent to prove it.
Barbara was an extremely hard and conscientious worker. She graduated from Parrish High School with high honors. In her senior year of high school, Barbara started an entry level position at Bush Hog Incorporated and worked her way up to become the first female in the company's history to head a department.
Barbara met the love of her life, George Manis during the summer of 1968 at a social event. George was stationed at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama as an instructor pilot. They later married on January 18th, 1969. George had two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth from a previous marriage that Barbara took in and gave love and care as if they were her own. Later, Barbara and George had three children of their own which Barbara devoted her life to raising. She was a warm and compassionate mother who always put the needs of her children and others before her own. As a military spouse, Barbara went above and beyond by caring for her family during George's many extended overseas assignments. As all good mothers do, they get promoted to grandma and her grand kids were her heart and soul.
Barbara was an excellent cook and her meals during the holidays and other events were always a crowd favorite...especially her sweet potato casserole. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed trips with her husband to Cody, Wyoming, Montana, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and Mount Rushmore. Barbara was fascinated with Western history and art. She enjoyed crossword puzzles; reading; decorating; spending time with her family and last but certainly not least, her Alabama Crimson Tide football team...ROLL TIDE ROLL!
Barbara is survived by her loving husband George of 47 years, sons Chris and Mike, daughter Mary (Darren), grandchildren Lexie, Sadie and Caleb. She was preceded in death by her father Jake, mother Nora, sisters Jeanette and Evelyn, and brothers, Frank, Jake, Alan, James and Lawton.
