Barry Miya (Gubby) passed away suddenly on January 31st, 2019.
He was a compassionate person who would give the shirt off of his back to anyone.
Barry was born in August of 1959, in Ogden, Utah. He was the beloved son of Tomo and Chieko Miya. Growing up, he enjoyed helping his grandparents on the farm; herding cattle, working the fields, and planting gardens, which he continued to do with his parents throughout his life.
He graduated from Layton High School in 1977, where he excelled in sports. Barry lettered in wrestling and football. After high school, he attended numerous classes at Weber State University and Utah State University, until he eventually found his calling in law enforcement. He served the community for over 20 years. He began and ended his career working for the Davis County Sheriff Department, where he made many life-long friends. He also worked for Kaysville Police Department, Weber State Police Department, and South Ogden Police Department. Though he loved his time with all of the departments, his true passion was working with the DNR where he could be in his favorite place: the outdoors.
He loved to host his famous poker nights for his friends, build model cars and airplanes, collect the latest movie, and take photos (though blurry) of his family and wildlife; but the thing he loved most was spending time with his family who brought out his competitive side.
Barry was responsible for many self-made versions of golf and pool in an attempt to beat his brothers, though he never did. He just loved that the games brought them together.
Though he loved his family with all of his heart, the true lights of his life were his nieces and nephews. He lived and breathed for them and was more than an uncle. He was a shoulder to lean on, someone to turn to, but most of all…a best friend.
He truly lived up to his name, “The Great Uncle Barry” Gubby!
Barry is preceded in death by his father, Tomo Miya. He is survived by his mother, Chieko; brothers Guy (Joyce), Kirk (Tess), Todd (Kimberley), Javon (Melanie), Shelby (Julie); cousins; and MANY nieces and nephews.
