Bart Peterson

June 21, 1957 — May 31, 2021

Bart William Peterson

Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Coworker and Friend, Bart William Peterson, left this mortal existence Monday, May 31, 2021.

He was born June 21, 1957, in Dugway, Utah, the fifth of eight children to Sharon Michaelis and Floyd Wilbur Peterson. He always loved the fact that he came from a large family. He dearly loved his parents and siblings. Our entire lives he would always talk about the different things he would remember about each one of them. To his kids he always made sure that his parents and siblings were seen in high regard. We never heard our dad say a negative thing about any member of his family.

He grew up in Layton, Utah on Aircraft Avenue with a neighborhood full of kids. He had fond memories of his childhood and would talk often about the different neighbors he had and the buddies he would hang out with playing softball, driveway basketball, night games, surely life-long bonds were established there.

When he was a young man Bart was driving in his truck past Chapel Street Park in Layton, Utah when he saw a friend at the tennis courts and decided to stop by to say hi, when a young girl (Carrie) caught his eye. They said “hi” and that was really it for their first meeting. Apparently, he was interested in meeting that girl again because one day when he was playing softball (again at Chapel Street Park), he asked his friend about the girl she was playing tennis with. Bart and Carrie went on to be married on June 16, 1978, in Layton, Utah. They were later sealed on July 9, 1982, in the Ogden Utah Temple.

He graduated High School in 1975 from Layton High.

He began his working career in Concrete. Working with Mitchell’s Foundations and Adams Love. He later went on to start his own Concrete Company. He did concrete for years. Following his time doing concrete he went into construction management and was involved in building all types of buildings (houses, churches, gas stations, warehouses, Historic Cove Fort restoration, etc.). Though he loved the work he performed in his younger days, his real passion came when he began his career in the Railroad Manufacturing Industry. He loved being in heavy industrial manufacturing. He loved the steel and the big equipment. But he also loved the more intricate aspects of the advanced technology of the railroad industry.   He had a real knack for inventing things. He would engineer and build improvements to assembly lines. He found tremendous success in leaning out processes to increase production and efficiency. Though he was the General Manager and could have found an excuse to spend most of his time at his desk, it was not uncommon to find Bart right alongside his crew working the assembly lines. Into his 60’s he would sling 400 insulated bars each weighing around 94lbs when he filled in for an empty slot along the assembly line. His crew loved him for this. He was not just another “higher up”. He went on to win national recognitions. Winning Plant of the Year awards with LB Foster numerous times. Winning Industry Week Magazine Plant of the year awards. Many other awards and recognitions. Most important to Bart was the people he worked with, and he cared for them like family. He elevated everyone around him. He gave people second chances. He truly changed lives. He loved his LB Foster work family.

If this was not enough, he got the entrepreneurship bug near retirement and decided to start another business. He successfully launched an Interim Healthcare franchise. This experience working with his wife, son (Jordon) and daughter (Lora) was truly amazing. The lessons learned from him, and the time spent with him working together is something that will be cherished forever. He enjoyed working with and was grateful to all those who he worked with at Interim Healthcare. He Loved his Interim Work Family. The legacy of his Interim Healthcare Franchises will live on with his wife and children.

His place of residence often changed as he moved for his occupations. He spent a number of years living in different places, Layton, UT, Clinton, UT, Corcoran, CA, Florence, CO, Canon City, CO, Penrose, CO, Pueblo West, CO, Canfield, OH. Home however always was Layton, UT.

He loved fishing, hunting, golfing, softball, camping, hiking, skiing, ice skating, teasing, and being a prankster. Some of the fondest memories we have come from these interactions with him. He loved hunting with his dad, uncles, brothers, sons, and grandkids. Pheasant hunting and Deer Hunting trips as a family were particularly memorable to him. Fly fishing on the Logan River, East Canyon Dam or floating down the Snake River were his preferred fishing spots.

He especially loved to watch his kids and grandkids whatever the activity was. His favorite hobby however was to give service. This is where his true joy came from. He just loved it. Whether it was pouring concrete for someone, fixing a roof, building a shed, fixing up a house, replacing a water heater, painting something, putting in sprinklers, building a deck, hanging drywall, fixing someone’s car, giving to someone in need and the list goes on and on. Some might say he gave to a fault. He did thousands upon thousands of service projects. He gave when he had nothing to give. But this was who he was. He would always put himself last. By doing so he was in fact putting himself first because that is what made him happy and gave him true joy.

Kids meant the world to Bart. Whenever you saw him there was a swarm of kids. He was known as the toe popper, the gum man, the water fight starter, the antagonist, the fun uncle, & the teacher. No kids meant more to him than his five kids when they were little and especially his grandchildren. His grandkids just loved him to pieces.

Bart enjoyed his callings as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He primarily served in positions with the Youth of the Church, Young Men’s, Boy Scouts, Sunday School, and his favorite, Primary.

Bart was the eternal optimist. He could never wait until tomorrow. Because he got better looking every day.

Bart is survived by his Wife of 43 years (Carrie Linn Scoffield), Mom (Sharon Michaelis Peterson), his Mother-In-Law (Carol Scoffield), his sons, Matthew (Kelly) Peterson, Jordon (Caroline) Peterson, Frank (Kayla) Peterson, Cort (Amanda) Peterson, his daughter, Lora (Dan) Mitchell, his 18 grandchildren, his brothers, Michael (Bonnie) Peterson, Doug (Cindy) Peterson, Brian (Debbie) Peterson,  his sisters, Geri (Jon) Titus, Carol (Layne) Stephens, Lynette (Brent) Bogden, Bonnie Peterson (David Burke).

He is preceded in death by his Father, Floyd Wilbur Peterson, his Father-In-Law, Edward Morris “Ladd” Scoffield, and two of his grandchildren, Tori Lynn Peterson, and Carter Cort Peterson.
