Basil Eugene “Gene” Staten
LAYTON – Basil Eugene “Gene” Staten , 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 8, 1927 in Rigby, Idaho the son of Henry and Frances Butler Staten. He was raised in Rigby, Idaho graduating from Rigby High School.
Gene served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from DDO after 35 years of service.
He married Virginia Schmid and later divorced. From this marriage three children were born, Pat (Shane) Fisher, Terrie (Var) Stephens and Larry (Kathy) Staten Young. On February 18, 1955, he married the love of his life Caril Lea Johnson. From this marriage four children were born, Betsy (Rod) Brown, Laury (Trace) VanderSteen, Jim (Donna) Staten and Tawna Tarran.
Gene is survived by his children, 21 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Caril Staten, grandson, Jeremy Young and granddaughter, Tracee VanderSteen.
Dad loved traveling, the Utah Jazz, camping and his greatest love was golf.
The family would like to thank Envision Hospice, especially Brianna, Rhoda, Rochelle and Dan for their special care of our father.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4 th Ave and N Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
