Benjamin “Ben” Paul Vigil

Benjamin “Ben” Paul Vigil, 85, of Ogden, Utah passed away of natural causes on March 1, 2014 in American Fork, Utah.

He was born on June 28, 1928 in Montrose, Colorado to Juan and Erinella Chacon Vigil.  He was raised in Colorado and Utah.  He graduated from Ogden High School and joined the Navy, serving aboard aircraft carriers and destroyers.  He traveled the world while serving our country.  After returning from his service in the Navy, he was visiting his brother Pete and wife, Dora, where he met Dora’s sister, Lucy Ella “Lucy” Marie Martinez.  They were married on June 18, 1954 in Mora, New Mexico.  They raised three children, Ron, Ken, and Paula Diane.

Ben was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ogden for over 50 years.  He served as an Elder and a Deacon.

He retired from Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft maintenance supervisor after working 30 plus years as an Aircraft Mechanic.  He was a great artist; he did leatherwork, creating beautiful purses and wallets, and he enjoyed oil painting.  He loved the outdoors and spending time with his brothers and sons hunting, fishing, and back packing.  Ben and Lucy Ella enjoyed dancing and listening to music.

Ben is survived by his wife, Lucy Ella; their children, Ken (Roma) Vigil and Paula Diane (Ken) Yates; grandchildren, Isaac Vigil, Jenny Vigil Bingham, Luke Vigil, Maya Vigil, Serena Vigil, Nathan Yates and Maggie Yates; three great-grandchildren, Emma Vigil, Korvin Jones and Kanyian Vigil Bingham.  He was preceded in death by his son, Ron Vigil.

He grew up in a large family with 10 brothers and sisters.  His siblings include, Pete (deceased) (Dora), Joe (deceased) (Maria), Sandy (Charles deceased) Hall; Julia (Albert) Garcia, Robert (Gloria deceased), Mela (Joe) Cortez, Charles (Joan), Juan A. (Larna), and Fred (deceased) Isabel; and brother-in-law, Wilfred “Marty” (Lola) Martinez and Mack (deceased) (Winnie) Allen. Ben had a loving extended family, including many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and many great friends.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 880 28th St.  Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
