Bernard Goodwin

November 12, 1925 — March 9, 2018

Bernard Lewis Goodwin

1925 – 2018

Bernard Goodwin died suddenly on Friday, March 9, 2018, from a heart attack at the age of 92.

He was born November 12, 1925 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Samuel R. and Rose Marie Goodwin. Bernard was the second of seven children.

He graduated from high school in June, 1944, and was drafted into the Navy as a Seaman 1st Class. He was trained as an airborne radar technician, an aerial gunner, and an aviation ordnance expert and served on the aircraft carrier, USS Bennington, until he was honorably discharged in July of 1946. Returning to civilian life, Bernie studied carpentry, radio repair, and became a master machinist and tool maker.

He married Janet Turton on November 18, 1950.

Bernie and his family moved from East St. Louis to a small farm in Roy in 1960. Bernard worked for various local companies, including United Precision Machining, Fram Corp., and Williams International, where he was in charge of the machining and tool department for many years until his retirement in February 1988.

Bernie was active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a member of the parish Men’s Club. He was an avid fisherman and rarely came home without his limit. He was an excellent repairman and his large home workshop became the neighborhood center for fixing everything from cars, tractors, and other farm equipment, to lawnmowers, radios, and every kind of small appliance. His handcrafted, wooden Christmas gifts were always appreciated by those lucky enough to receive one. He was a kind, talented, and very generous man and will be greatly missed.

Bernie was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, and daughter, Deborah Ann Goodwin. He is survived by his son, Michael Craig Goodwin (Lynne), daughter, Linda Marie Bingham (Dennis Bingham), and son, Andrew Paul Goodwin (Susan Frederick), as well as his sister, Francis (Goodwin) Compton and brother, Reuben (Doris) Goodwin, and his much loved grandchildren Jeremy Paul Bingham, Melanie Ann (Bingham) Fry, Robert Craig Goodwin, Samantha Isabell Goodwin, and Nicholas Paul Goodwin and five great-grandchildren.

The family will meet with friends Wednesday, March 14th from 6 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary Mass at 7 p.m., at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South, also on Thursday from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4050 South 3900 West, West Haven.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd., where he will be laid to rest next to his wife and daughter.
