BERNICE YORIE KIDA
1934-2017
Our beloved mother and grandmother, Bernice Kida, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2017 in her Salt Lake City home surrounded by her loving family. Bernice was born on August 15, 1934 in Eureka, Utah. As a young child, her family moved to Japan where she was raised until her twenties. Shortly after moving back to Utah, she married Taka Kida on March 6, 1960 and had three children; Diane, Jeffrey and Kenneth.
Bernice was a very busy lady. While raising her family, she worked, attended beauty school and eventually opened her own beauty salon in Sugarhouse which she ran for almost 20 years. After retiring, Bernice would spend time performing and teaching classical Japanese folk dancing. She loved taking center stage performing at many events, among them the Utah Arts Festival and Living Traditions. Bernice was an avid chef. She won recognition and praise for her cooking which her family, especially her husband, enjoyed for many years. Bernice also enjoyed sewing, gardening and many kinds of crafts.
Nothing made Bernice smile more than her grandchildren. A proud grandmother, she loved showing off pictures and telling stories to her friends about all their accomplishments. Also important were her friendships at church which were a big part of her life.
Bernice is survived by her daughter Diane (Gordon) Okawa; son Jeffrey (Cynthia) Kida, son Kenneth (Sutton) Kida; her grandchildren Brandon Kida, Kelsey Kida, Cami Kida, Nickolas Okawa, Ireland Kida; and sisters Yurika Kubota, Lucille Ozaki, and Carol Kusumoto. She is preceded in death by her husband Taka and her parents Tanamo and Shizue Kikushima.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017 at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. Bountiful. Friends may visit the family on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service on Monday.
