Bertha Veenendaal Mason passed away peacefully at the home of her son March 24, 2023 after her memory had begun to slip away.
Bertha was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Veenendaal and Nellie Van Tussenbroek Veenendaal on June 17, 1929. She graduated from West High School in 1947. She lived in Rose Park from 1950-2022 in the same home.
She worked for Utah Woolen Mills when Aunt Francis Maude introduced her to Fred W. Mason. He was a returned missionary, and within a week they were engaged. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on January 19, 1950. They adopted two children, Raymond Van Mason in 1963 and Leslie Ann Mason in 1965.
She was a homemaker for many years. She worked for Louise Garden’s, See’s Candies, and Ballet West costume shop on occasions when they needed extra help. Bertha was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in Mutual, Sunday School and the Relief Society throughout the years. She loved to sew, and over the years, built wedding dresses for many young brides. She volunteered her time to make costumes for International Junior Folk dancers as well as Imagine Ballet Theatre’s Nutcracker, Secret Garden, Alice: Adventures in Wonderland and many other ballets over the past years. She loved to make the kids feel beautiful.
Bertha is survived by Raymond Van Mason and Gregg Tew, Leslie Ann Mason. Her Grandchild (Anthony) and Candra Mason along with their children, Natalie, Nya, Anthony Jr, Mariah and Abram. Her Grandchild (Mychal Jamaal) and Eveline Wilson along with their child Mychal Jamaal Jr. Grandchild (Courtney Stoudermire) and many nieces and nephews as well.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents John and Nellie Veenendaal. Her husband Fred W. Mason, and her brothers and sisters George Veenendaal, Francis Colby, Lucille Georgelle, Dorothy Smith, Richard Veenendaal.
Visitation will be held, Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary 727 North 400 East Bountiful, Utah, 84010. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 30, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Lindquist Bountiful Mortuary chapel, with visitation from 10-10:30 am with family prayer at 10:45. A luncheon will be served at the Rose Park 8th Ward, 1155 N 1200 W Salt Lake City, Utah, 84101, between 12:30 – 2:30 officiated by Brother Ron Jarrett. The interment will be Monday April 3rd at 11:00 am at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park Military Cemetery at 17111 1700 W Bluffdale, Utah 84065
The family would like to thank the Envision Hospice team members Shasta, Hailey, and Stephanie for their care over the past year. We would also like to thank the following family and friends, Nellie, Heather and Paiton Kerekes, John and Diane Smith, Mary Sohn, Beverly Foulger, Genevieve Frank, Kylee Kerby and Jeri Lynn Haacke.
Bertha touched the lives of many people in her years. She loved making children feel beautiful and happy. She was the ultimate dance mom, before anyone even knew what that was. Her quick wit and loving demeanor created a unique personality that everyone loved and was passed on through the generations following.
