Bertha Arline Sill Mattson
January 7, 1927 ~ January 7, 2014
Our beloved mom, grandma, and grams passed away peacefully the morning of January 7, 2014, on her 87th birthday. She was born the youngest of four children to Joseph Ralph Sill and Bertha Elizabeth Child in Roy, Utah. The family lived in Roy for only a short time before moving to Ogden to follow the growth of the railroad.
Mom spent the remainder of her life in Ogden, attending Ogden City schools and graduating as a proud “Tiger” from Ogden High in 1945. She worked at the Mountain Bell phone company following high school and various part time jobs through her life.
In April of 1948, she married the love of her life, Sheldon Jack Mattson. Mom and dad spent much time together traveling after retirement, to Hawaii, Alaska several times, and all points north, south, east and west of Ogden. They loved this time of adventure and togetherness – either with friends, relatives or just the two of them.
Mom was very active in so many activities – she bowled at Ben Lomond Lanes for many years, golfed at Golf City and served as President of the Ladies Golf Association for three years, was an avid creator of many beautiful china painted dolls, laced draped dolls, and many ceramic pieces. She loved the game of Bridge. She would never walk away from a good bridge game. She belonged to several bridge clubs and played for fun and competition. Mom was also a member of the Altruist of Ogden and served as President for a year.
Mom was blessed with two children, Lynne (Jerry) Wade and Ralph J. (Vickie) Mattson. She has eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, all of which brought her great joy and happiness. She loved family gatherings and celebrating happy occasions.
At mom’s requests, there will only be a Graveside service on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road. Service entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the ALS Association, Development Department, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301, or the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Salt Lake City, Utah,
in her name.
