Beth Macfarlane Orgill Butterfield
May 6, 1932 ~ March 29, 2014
Beth Macfarlane Orgill Butterfield, 81, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born on May 6, 1932 in Ogden, Utah, the youngest daughter of Hubert Adams and Ora Orton Macfarlane.
Beth married Derwin Jay Orgill on September 11, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were later divorced. She married Paul Gordon Butterfield on April 10, 1976 in Ogden, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple.
She is survived by her husband Paul of Ogden; her daughters, Kay Orgill, Diann (Cody) Ward, Janae (Curtis) Sutton, and Nanette (Reggie) Traylor; Paul’s children Paula (Les) Maddock, Greg (Robin) Butterfield, Lynn (Sue) Butterfield, Sue (Paul) Cook, David (Martha) Butterfield, and Tammy (Roy) Ellis; and many treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother, J. Ralph Macfarlane.
Beth lived most of her life in the Ogden area except for brief periods in Salt Lake and Provo. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1950, completed her Associate of Science degree at Weber State College in 1952, and squeezed in a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Weber State in 1974 while working full time and raising her family. After retirement, she and Paul enjoyed spending winter months in Sun City, AZ.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beth served in various capacities in Young Women’s, Scouting and Relief Society including time as Relief Society President in the Pleasant View 4th Ward. Paul and Beth served missions from 1992-94 as Coordinators for the CES programs in Harare, Zimbabwe and Budapest, Hungary.
Beth enjoyed a successful career outside her home working at various times for the Utah State House of Representatives, Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Dee Hospital, Weber State College, and the Weber County Department of Aging and Volunteer Services as the Director and Program Administrator of In-Home Services. She also joined Paul during his sabbatical in 1990 teaching at China Medical University in Shenyang, Peoples Republic of China.
Music was very important to Beth and her family. She played the violin and had a lovely singing voice. She instilled the importance of hard work and her love of learning in all her children. She was an amazing seamstress and her progeny benefitted from the prolific output of her sewing machine -- matching Easter outfits for her four daughters, Halloween costumes and machine quilting were particular specialties. She loved to travel and never found a gift shop she didn’t like.
Preceding Beth in death were her parents, brothers Wayne, Welling and Karl, her sister Miriam, son-in-law Cody, grandson Devin and great-granddaughters Kaylee and Shalee.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
