Betty Burt

December 12, 1923 — June 29, 2021

Betty C. Burt, 97, lovingly known as "Mutti," passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, in Syracuse, Utah. She was born on December 12, 1923 in Delta, Utah, to Joseph Oren Clark and Josie Mae Clark. Her family moved to Salt Lake City, Magna, and Price, finally settling in Pocatello, Idaho. While in Magna, as a small child she contracted diphtheria and had to learn how to walk again.

In Pocatello, Betty spent her formative years on the family farm, becoming an accomplished horseback rider. At 17, she led Pocatello’s 50th Anniversary parade on her father’s prize horse, Silver. In her seventies she rode a horse for the last time and demonstrated that she had never lost her skills. While in high school, she worked as an elevator operator in her father’s building. She graduated from Pocatello High School and went on to Woodbury College in Los Angeles where she got her diploma. Upon returning to Pocatello, she worked as a timekeeper for the Union Pacific Railroad.

Betty met David R. Burt of Brigham City, Utah, and they married on March 5, 1947 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They settled in Ogden, Utah and raised two daughters before divorcing in 1987

Betty worked for Whitehead Wholesale Electric for many years, retiring in 1986. She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and enjoyed the challenge of teaching Beehive girls and solving the mysteries of her family history. She loved boating and water skiing, and as a senior citizen, she learned to ride motorcycles and rode her Nighthawk to Jackson Hole. She never lost her passion for classic movies and believed that anything filmed after 1960 didn’t qualify.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Joseph Oren Clark Jr. and Jack Thomas Clark, and a daughter, Emily Josephine Burt (stillborn). She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Garner (Brent) of Clinton, Utah, and Koren Kline (Danny) of Syracuse, Utah; five grandchildren, Kristen, Dustin, Damon, Erin and Emily; 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

The family offers special gratitude to the care-givers from Atlas Homecare and Hospice, especially Stefani, Tonya, Whitney, and Wendy.
