Betty Robinson Honstein

Betty Robinson Honstein was born October 22, 1929, in Lewiston, Utah, to Elijah and Fannie Anderson Robinson, the youngest of ten children. She passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 at her home surrounded by family.

She often said she caused the depression, and while that was never proved, she was definitely a product of it and her family was profoundly affected by it. They moved to Southern California to seek work when she was four.

It was there that she met and married her eternal companion, Harvey Honstein, on June 30, 1946, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was selfless in her devotion to him and always saw that his needs were met, including wearing the same bullet-proof polyester business suit every day to work for a year so that he could have the finest in fishing gear.

She was equally selfless to her children, and to everyone with whom she ever came in contact. Having grown up with little worldly wealth, she gave everything she had. While living in Garden Grove, California, in close proximity to Disneyland, distant relatives and friends would show up unannounced at her doorstep looking for a place to stay while their family vacationed. She never turned anyone away and always fed them like royalty, even when she found herself with empty shelves. She could make more meals out of less food than anyone on earth. You never left her home hungry.

Harvey and Betty moved with their three youngest children to Utah in 1970, eventually settling in North Ogden. This is where she fulfilled two of her favorite callings in the church, callings where her gifts of unconditional love and compassion were exemplified. She served as the leader of the 11-year old scouts when no one else was willing to accept the calling and in doing so, she made a profound impact on the lives of the boys. She later served as Relief Society President and set the standard by which all others should serve by.

She received her high school diploma after all of her children were born, showing by example that it is never too late to finish what you start. Her sense of humor saw her family through trials, tragedies, and turmoil, and is one of the greatest gifts she gave her children.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren know her as GB and will remember her for her cooking them whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it. She was genius at creating imaginative fun. Every shack was a honeymoon suite and oil factories were castles. If it was too cold to go outside, she brought the snow inside. She wrote children''s stories that always defended and promoted those who were considered less lovable.

She is survived by her children: Cheryl Honstein, whose siblings are indebted to for the care of Mom when she could no longer care for herself; Gail (Bob) Martin, Gainesville, GA; Marianne (Mark) Petersen, North Ogden , UT; Julie (Kevin) Fielding, Saint George, UT; Todd (Marilyn, who she considered a daughter), North Ogden, UT. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren (Jennifer, Joshua, Brad, Jill, Katie, Kyle, Logan, Elijah, Morgan, Caleb, Paige, Bennett, Tyler, Adam, and Heather) and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by, and is happily reunited with, her husband Harvey, her granddaughter Tara, her parents, and her nine siblings. As a family, we are thrilled that she is where she wants to be, with the family she has missed for so long. We will miss her every single day, but are grateful for the knowledge that we will laugh with her again.

In lieu of flowers, the family would invite those wishing to pay tribute to do so by making a contribution to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Friends may visit family at Lindquist''s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., Monday evening October 21, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. No funeral services will be held. Betty''s son, Todd, will dedicate the grave at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden.
