Betty Lee Hefty Johnson

August 31, 1921 ~ August 15, 2015

Betty Lee Hefty Johnson, passed away on August 15, 2015.  She was born on August 31, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of Samuel Edward Hefty and Emma Baxley.

She married her lifelong sweetheart, Harold Don Johnson on March 7, 1942.  After he returned from World War II they were sealed in marriage in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

Betty Lee would like to be remembered by the many children and teachers whose lives she touched through her television programs, “Art with Miss Betty and The Building Blocks of Art”.  These programs originated from stations KWCS channel 18 Weber County School District.  KUED channel 7 in Salt Lake City.  Other TV stations that televised her art lessons in school districts throughout the Western States were; channel 12 Utah State University, and channel 11 Brigham Young University.

Her paintings hang in private homes in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Connecticut, California, Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah.

During World War II Betty Lee was voted queen of the All-Church Dance Festival at the University of Utah Football Stadium.  This honor she retained for 3 consecutive years.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in many Ward and Stake leadership positions.  She and her husband Don served a German Extraction Mission, as well as serving as Stake missionaries in the Yorktown, New York Stake.  For two and one-half years she acted as a hostess in the Relief Society Building in Salt Lake City.

Betty Lee Also served as Chi Omega Sorority Alumni President, President of the Sego Lily Chapter of the Quester’s Antique Club, and twice served as President of the Chareya Civic Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don.  She is survived by a son, David H. Johnson (Debi) of Ogden, Utah; and a daughter, Janilee Johnson of Chicago, Illinois.  She is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Johnson, Don Johnson (Paola), Melissa Pomale (Sione), Anna Whittier (Christian), Max Johnson, Janilee Elizabeth Johnson, Logan Mark Johnson Fry and Lucas Orion Johnson Fry.  She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Castner; her niece, Sunny Lindsay; nephew, Cary Don Stark; and nephew, Sheridan Prince and their wives and children.  All of whom she loved dearly.

It is her request that no flowers be sent inasmuch as she received many bouquets of love, kindness, friendship and honor when she lived, and for which she expresses to each of those givers her love and gratitude.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Burch Creek 5 th Ward Chapel, 4955 Adams Avenue, South Ogden.  Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

The family would also like to express gratitude to the loving hospice care workers from Legacy Health Care, especially her nurse Bonnie, and also to the staff at Fairfield Village of Layton.
